Fifty years after Out of Africa, an American journalist writes of her friendship with the inhabitants of a Maasai village in Kenya and offers an unprecedented portrait of an extraordinary people and a rapidly vanishing way of life. 16 pages of photos.
This was a great explanation of the current (1980s) reality of Maasai life without the romanticised exaggeration we are shown and often want to believe. I would have preferred to have a bit more factual information on the various Maasai tribes, their history, their hierarchies etc but that wasn’t what the book was about. It was explaining the difficulties faced as they try to reject / assimilate to the modern world.
A personal look of Maasai culture near Nairobi in the early 1980's. I found the author's comments about her encounters with the land and Maasai culture very interesting. I'm certain much has changed and it will be interesting to see the changes.
Interesting book about the proud warriors , the Maasai, who lived in Kenya, Africa. The author lived in Kenya from 1980 to 1986 and became c lose friends with several of these proud Natives.
an excellent book detailing an American woman's interaction with a people who have maintained their old ways through the turmoil of british colonialism, kenyan independence, and everything in between. Well written, although sometimes the characters are a bit hard to keep separate.
A Maasai friend recommended I read this as an insight into their culture, fascinating. Thoroughly enjoyed it and given the recommendation it came from, all true.
