This is a good book for young teens interested in the history of clowning. It is also reasonable reading for an adult, although I would have liked a lot more detail.

There were many pictures, but only in black and white. That is a distinct disadvantage when reading about clowns because clown makeup and costuming are dependent on shades and colors. In black and white photos one can only see varying shades of gray.

FYI, I was once a professional clown, trained by a professional clown. I was good. Although I doubt I was good enough for the Barnum & Baily circus I did manage to get a few seconds on stage at Circus Circus in Las Vegas for bragging rights. It was fun. I was also allowed into the Magic Castle in Los Angeles as a professional courtesy. They were very kind. I doubt seriously if they knew me.

I own this book in hardcover. I will probably keep it around for quick reference.
