This essayist, a prominent figure in literature and cinema for over 61 years, composed a wide variety, such as celebrated A View from the Bridge and All My Sons , still studied and performed worldwide. Miller often in the public eye most famously refused to give evidence to the un-American activities committee of the House of Representatives, received award for drama, and married Marilyn Monroe. People at the time considered the greatest Miller.

Não quero ter a mente concentrada, quero-a receptiva para o que está à minha volta. Será que isso parece estranho ou desonroso? Estou a tentar encontrar o que fazer para viver como uma pessoa. Leio livros e poetas já mortos como Emily Dickinson e Edna St. Vicent Millay, e eu também…
- Não me parece que tenhas amigos, tens?
-Porquê? Será que os amigos deixam marcas? Se calhar não estou preparada para ter amigos. Se calhar ainda não nasci completamente.

Não percebo como é que este livro tem uma pontuação tão baixa no GR. Um livro escrito por um homem que pensa como uma mulher é tão desvalorizado? Então, pessoas? Foram poucos os anos passados com Marilyn, mas Arthur Miller parece ter aprendido qualquer coisa acerca da psique feminina.
O título desta obra é simultaneamente factual e irónico, porque Janice é aparentemente simples na forma como encara a vida e as relações, mas a sua personalidade e opções são verdadeiramente complexas. Achei-a uma protagonista encantadora, verdadeira…

Ela ficava ali a pensar: “Será que estamos juntos porque ambos nos sentimos indesejados?” Esta afronta odiosa, uma vez alojada no cérebro dela, leva-a cada vez mais à garrafa, e com dois copos ela consegue pronunciar o pior:
- Ele faz amor como se estivesse a pôr uma carta no correio.

…terra-a-terra, combativa e rápida no gatilho.

- Como é que podes viver nesta lixeira com tudo a cair?
- Gosto de tudo a cair, é menos competição quando eu começar a cair.

Janice é uma mulher que não foi bafejada pela beleza de Greta Garbo que tanto venera, mas sabe seduzir.

Quando ia a festas por mais de uma vez tinha reparado que os homens que estavam atrás dela eram apanhados de surpresa quando ela se voltava para eles. Mas tinha aprendido a sacudir o cabelo liso, brilhante e castanho-claro e a pôr aquela expressão de ironia defensiva, perdão silencioso para o desaparecimento inevitável deles.

Sem grandes ambições na vida, há nela um enorme desejo de ser ouvida e vista, mas quando se casa com Sam, um homem que interpreta o mundo e a arte com os óculos do comunismo, é a insatisfação e a frustração que dominam a sua vida. Apesar da melancolia que invade esta diminuta novela, é apaziguante despedirmo-nos de Janice satisfeita com o balanço que faz da vida…

Dos 61 anos de vida tinha tido 14 bem passados. Nada mau.

Porque, tal como o título, também o destino é irónico e, em circunstâncias excepcionais, Janice “foi vista”.

Politiquices à parte - que este livro também se debruça sobre o tema - esta é a história de uma mulher que passa a maior parte da vida saltitando entre relações inconstantes em busca da sua independência, de um sentido para a vida e, claro, do amor. Daquele amor grandioso que no fundo todos buscamos. Da pessoa especial que a olhasse de dentro para fora e não a fizesse sentir-se avaliada e julgada. E encontrou. Na pessoa de um cego, que a "olhou" e a "viu" como nenhum até ali.
E depois, que importância tem a espera? Há que valorizar a felicidade vivida em detrimento do tempo perdido.
Não sei se é uma história para mulheres, mas certamente serão elas a rever-se nesta personagem e a compreendê-la melhor que qualquer homem.

راوية قصيرة بسيطة وجميلة تقوم على العلاقات الإنسانية غير أن الترجمة أقل من المستوى المطلوب حسب ما أظنه خاصة في الجزء الأول من النص مما لم يعطني بهجة القراءة التي كنت أصبو لها كما إن هناك بعض الأخطاء الإملائية أيضا أو الطباعية ربما إن أحسنتُ الظن .. مع ذلك كنت سعيدة بقراءة نص للمرة الأولى للكاتب الأمريكي المسرحي آرثر ميللر والذي حسب علمي لم يكتب سوى هذه الرواية القصيرة الوحيدة أما أشهر أعماله المسرحية والتي ستكون على قائمة البحث هي موت بائع متجول

La novela que Philip Roth jamás pudo escribir. Ya sea por su ánimo maximalista o su insuficiente comprensión de la psicología femenina.

En el plano macro-histórico, el desarrollo histórico y político de la izquierda norteamericana. En el micro, el crecimiento y desarrollo de una chica judía sin mucho atractivo físico y también su ánimo de comprenderse a sí misma.

Parte de unas filiaciones comunistas de los años treinta, con su apoyo a la guerra civil española y sus guiños a Stalin, que van íntimamente relacionados con su pareja de entonces, otro joven judío llamado Fink. Su mentalidad evoluciona, cambia su situación sentimental. Encuentra a otro hombre, un músico ciego y ella encuentra sus reivindicaciones políticas se asocian a la defensa de los derechos civiles a lo largo y ancho del país, con lo cual ya se puede decir que halla su nicho.

Una lectura ligera, una acuarela sencilla y vivaz, manejada por una mano diestra. Hasta ahora la única experiencia que tenía con la literatura de Arthur Miller se limitaba a adaptaciones cinematográficas, ahora certifico que en la novela corta demuestra buen saber. No es magistral pero sí gratificante y con eso hoy bastará.

وقد انتظرتها طويلاً ..
وكان من الفترض أن أبدأ بروايتك الأخري الأشهر والأنجح / موت بائع متجول ..
ولكني لا أعلم لماذا بدأت معك بهذه الرواية ؟



بالتأكيد هناك قصة ما .. ومغزي ما .. وهدف ما ..
لكنه لم يصلني للأسف ..
لم اشعر بروحك الأدبية .. ولم اندمج مع البطلة التي لا تتوقف عن التفكير أو الثرثرة دون هدف ودون معني !
هناك أحداث تحدث .. هناك حوار يتم .. ولكني لم أجد نتيجة .. ولم أجد شغفاً يجعلني أكمل وأنا مستمتعة بالقراءة لك ..

ربما لم يُحالفني الحظ مع قلمك هذه المرة ..
وأرجو أن تكون موت بائع متجول مختلفة عن فتاة عادية ..
فلقد كانت حقا عادية يا ميللر ..
عادية أكثر من اللازم
!

"Tudo era sentimento, nada era claro."

Um conto deliciosamente envolvente e divertido, que se adapta ao nosso tempo como uma luva. Janice é uma mulher a transportar nos nossos corações, com todaa a sua honestidade, frontalidade, tristeza e humor contagiante. Esta história pertence-lhe, pois é através dos seus olhos que vemos o retrato das relações com os homens da sua vida, no mundo complexo que a rodeia.
Definitivamente não é uma boa leitura para curar insónias, mas antes um aperitivo que abre o apetite para a refeição.

الكاتب العملاق آرثر ميللر يلخص لنا ما كان يرغب في الحديث عنه طوال عمره....بل أن القصة تعنيه هو وتتحدث عنه وهو في آخر عمره...عمقه ينقلك إلى وسط الوجدان الإنساني...كل هذا في هذه الخمسين صفحة...برغم عمره الكبير إلا أن الإبداع لا يزال يسيطر على أعماله...ليس هناك من أعماله شيئ لم يلامس القمة...كل مسرحياته التي تحولت إلى أفلام كانت رائعة خاصة البوتقة...أعماله نوعية وفخمة...لا يمكنك أن تقرأ له دون أن تغرق في سحر أسلوبه الأخاذ...

Whilst I am rather a big fan of Arthur Miller's plays, Plain Girl, which I purchased from Books for Amnesty in Cambridge back in April, was the first of his prose works which I had read. It seemed a fitting tome to read in the current climate; its blurb states that the novella (or, arguably, the extended short story) 'is a beautifully crafted account of a quest for personal fulfilment against a backdrop of world crisis'. Rather than the threat of Trump and the havoc which he is already wreaking, the threat in Plain Girl is Hitler; even in New York, 'the Germans were rallying on the street corners to bait Jews and praise Hitler on summertime Saturday nights'.

Published in the United States in 1992, and in the United Kingdom in 1995, Plain Girl has been very highly praised; the Evening Standard calls it a 'superb fiction' which 'deserves praising to the top of the highest skyscraper for its humanity, wit and depth', and The Sunday Times deems it 'a tiny jewel of a book.

Janice Sessions, the protagonist of the piece, is seen by all as a plain girl, despite being the daughter of a 'stylish old-fashioned New York Jew'. We first meet her as she lays beside her dead husband in bed; much of the novel then goes back to look at her past relationships. When her beau, a 'passionate communist' named Sam, leaves for war, she begins to discover her own identity, falling in love once more, and feeling valued.

To anyone at all familiar with his plays, it will come as no surprise that Plain Girl is marvellously written. The sense of both time and place is strong, and Miller demonstrates a wonderful insight. From the first page, Janice has rather a startling psychological depth to her, and is not at all a stereotypical woman of her class and period. She is rather a complex character: 'She was and wanted to be a snob... She wondered if she'd been drawn out of the womb and lengthened, or her mother startled by a giraffe... She had a tonic charm and it was almost - although not quite, of course - enough, not since childhood...'. So many of the themes which are explored here are of great importance now, from politics and grief, to family, war, sexual relations, and literature.

Plain Girl is a poignant and resonant novella. At just 76 pages of rather large type, it is incredibly brief, a mere breath of a story. Regardless, Miller packs in such depth. The whole has been well ordered, and intelligently crafted. Miller provides a quick but thought-provoking foray into the mind of a woman, and her struggle to find her own place in an unstable world. Whilst Plain Girl did not take my breath away in quite the way that his plays have done, and did not feel quite as clever, it is certainly worth seeking out.

رواية تتكلم عن فتاة تريد حريتها و متعتها بعيدا عن تفكير اخيها في جمع المال و المتاجره بالعقارات ،، تبحث عن الرجل المناسب و الذي تستطيع ان تحبه كما ينبغي

و اعتقد ان الاعمى تشارلز كان هو الشخص المناسب .،

رواية عادية جداً للأسف ..
مع أن اسم الكاتب يلمع في ذهني منذ مدة ورغبت حقاً في القراءة له.. إلا أن الاختيار لم يكن موفقاً.
أحداث بسيطة، ترجمة ركيكة، لا حوارات، لا سرد ممتع وتفتقر لأي مقوم من مقومات الإبهار.

كيف لدار نشر ان تحرق حبكة القصة كلها في الصفحات الأولى, عدا عن اخطاء الترجمة وجملة رواية من خمسين صفحة في مقدمة الكتاب وتتفاجئ بعدد صفحات زائدة بسبب حجم الخط فقط لأغراض تجارية

This is a short novella snipped into 6 parts where the first part is half the novella's length and it's the one I liked the least. Plain girl is about, well... Janice, a plain girl, set in 40s - 50s America. What she has going for her is her search for happiness and her promiscuity. Although details about her are sparse as there's too much going on in this short text - multiple conversation about fascism and communism, several lovers - it's hard to then connect with Janice, although on all account she's a likable character.

The first part drags on with mostly tell and no show, the dialogue lacks the subtlety and subtext that all the other parts do have and, frankly, it's all over the place. I struggled trying to make sense of what was going on as I was taken through different scenes and time frames along with different memories or characters, which was all in one continuous narrative. Certainly unusual considering how well-executed all the following parts were (also with regards to tightness of prose), and where the magic of the story lay. I'm glad I didn't abandon the book as I'm wont to do when it's not working, because I could't put it down later on.

كنت أقوم بترتيب مكتبتي الإلكترونية حين اصطدمت بهذه الرواية الصغيرة ولا أعلم لماذا قمت بتنزليها على جهازي ولا أعلم عن كاتبها إلا بأنه تزوّج من مارلين مونرو!
ابتدأت بها في صالة انتظار في عيادة طبية وأنهيتها بسرعة، الترجمة سطحية جدًا ومملة.
لم تعجبني للأسف.
"– ان معظم المتزوجين لم يتزوجوا عن حب، وإنما لكي يجد كل منهم تبرير لدى الآخر."

نوفيلا رائعة بها مستوى عال من الإنسانية والغوص ف نفس البشرية ،، ربما لم يتم ذلك بشكل عميق نظراً لعدد الصفحات القليلة ولكن آرثر ميلر تمكن خلال 122 صفحة من إيصال ما يريد ..
الترجمة سيئة بعض الشيء وربما أفقدت النص الأصلي جزء من جماله وبلاغته الأدبية ..

"تبدأ أحداث الرواية في السبعيات عندما تستيقظ ((جانيس)) من نومها في شقتها في نيويورك لتكتشف أن زوجها الثاني ((تشارلز)) قد مات أثناء نومه… وهكذا
تشعر بقبضة الحياة القوية تضرب رقبتها من الخلف. ورغم أن الرواية تبدأ بحالة موت وتنتهي ب ((جانيس)) وهي تراقب إزالة أحد فنادق نيويورك الذي شهد ذكريات جميلة لها إلا أنّ حالتها المعنوية متفائلة ومبتهجة"
جانيس الفتاة اليهودية الامريكية الغنية وذات الملامح الغير جميلة والتي عاصرت احداث عظيمة ومؤثرة. بدأت بالايمان بالمبادئ الشيوعية ومساندة زوجها الاول الذي كان داعما للشيوعية ومؤيدا لها بحماسة حتى انه لم يكن له اهتمام شديد بها وكأنه اهتمامه الوحيد لقضيته. حتى انه عندما تحالف ستالين وهتلر دعم وبشكل اعمى ستالين وهي ساندت زوجها. لكنها في مرحلة معينة تقرر الاهتمام بنفسها وذاتها وتخون زوجها. ينضم زوجها الى الحرب وتكون قد قررت الانفصال عنه وتأجل الامر الى عودته. وعندما يعود تخبره بالانفصال وبمنتهى البرود بعد أن تسمع منه اخبار الحبر وحديثه عن ممارسة الجنس مع اسيرة واحتقاره للاسيرة وكأنها غرض لا اكثر.
بعد انفصالها تحيا في فندق ولديها الكثير من وقت الفراغ ولا يوجد لها اهتمامات كثيرة يحاول اخوها ان يجعلها تشاركه في شراء العقارات والاستفادة من مرحلة الحرب وما بعدها فكل شيء بثمن زهيد ولا احد لديه مال للشراء والاستثمار الا الاثرياء لكنها ترفض فهي لا تبحث عن الثروة.
في احد الايام وعند خروجها من الفندق الذي تقيم به تقابل صدفة رجلا ويدور حديث بينهما ويحدث استلطاف بينهما وترافقه ويصبح زوجها ويعيشا سوية.
لقد كان زوجها اعمى ورغم ذلك وجدها جميلة واهتم بها وبمشاعرها وعاشت فترة مبهجة معه الى ان مات.
وفي المنظر الاخير للقصة تمر جانيس من جانب الفندق بعد سنوات لتجدهم يهدموه طابقا طابقا فتتذكر أسعد أيام حياتها وذكرياتها مع هذا المكان.

جانيس تروي الأحداث التي مرت بها منذ وجودها مع أبيها الى أحداث الحرب العالمية الثانية وكيف كان تأثير الشرق والغرب وألمانيا وغيرها على الناس والاضطرابات التي صارت أيام الحرب ثم زواجها الأول وحياة زوجها عندما توجه الى الحرب وروجعه وطلاقها الى أن تتعرف على زوجها الثاني وتصل الى نهاية الحكاية عند بلوغها الستين وواحد.

Creo que no he entendido en absoluto lo que Miller quería trasladar en esta breve historia. Son 90 páginas con un buen tamaño de letra e interlineado que se lee en una hora pero me he quedado igual.

Conocemos a Janice, que en su sesentena despierta al lado de su pareja que ha fallecido durante la noche. A partir de ese punto, de forma circular, Miller narra la vida de la mujer judía que, desde su juventud, ha tenido un grave problema de autoestima.

La mayor parte de la historia se centra en su juventud, años previos a la IIGM, y s su matrimonio con Sam, un hombre que no la satisfacía sexualmente y al que ella fue cogiendo manía por sus diferencias políticas. Tras su separación conoce a Charles, un músico ciego con quien congenia mejor.

Y poco más puedo decir de esta sosaina de historia que me ha dejado igual que si no la leyese. No sé si pretendía ser una denuncia de la dependencia femenina de los hombres, una llamada a la revolucionaria juventud, o una crítica al paso del tiempo y los ideales. Creo que algo me he perdido entre las tapas porque anodino ha sido un rato.

Janice Sessions, a Jewish New Yorker, feels limited by her plain looks. To compensate, she seeks out the company of other men when her communist husband goes to war. The woman is flawed and sexually promiscuous but her dalliances do little to satisfy her. They divorce, and in post-war New York, she discovers her independence, eventually finding fulfillment with a musician, himself physically flawed, whom she marries and lives with until he dies in his sixties.

The story is slight dwelling on her first marriage and it feels like the couple talked nothing but politics. Granted the political situation in the world was such that no one wouldn’t have had something to say about it but it keeps us from delving into more interesting aspects of the character. After all, politics is her husbands preoccupation not hers.

The rest of the book is made up of very short chapters that rush towards the book’s conclusion. Finding happiness and discovering an inner beauty are a matter of chance and perhaps that’s the book’s point, that although she had acted with an independence uncharacteristic of her gender at the time, she nevertheless couldn’t do much to control her destiny.

I didn’t find myself drawn to her. I didn’t find her especially likeable but I believe the fault there lies with Miller and not his creation. We can only work with what he provides and he is stingy with the facts. An easy read with some nice passages, especially the final chapter, but I never thought of her as a girl anywhere throughout the book, in fact the book begins and ends with her in her sixties.

For some strange reason the UK title is Plain Girl rather than Homely Girl; can’t think why they thought to make the change.
