THE DRINKING WATER BOOK takes a level-headed look at the serious issues surrounding America's drinking water supply. Unlike water purifier manufacturers and public health officials, Ingram presents unbiased reporting on what's in your water and how to drink safely. Featuring all the latest scientific research, the book evaluates the different kinds of filters and bottled waters and rates specific products on the market.• The completely revised comprehensive guide to making tap and bottled water safer, covering the toxins in our water, how to test for them, and how to get rid of them.• Honestly and thoroughly tackles a subject vital to ongoing environmental, health, and safety concerns.• Shows how to avoid bogus safety tests, scams, and unnecessary expenditures.• Details which toxins aren't regulated by federal and state water standards.
We have now identified much more toxins from our water than the author knew when he wrote this book. Almost a third of this book's content is devoted to 20 years old products from manufacturers that probably no longer exist.
The author has done extensive research and compiled accurate information that are still valid to this day. However, you can find everything written here on the internet. I'd give it 5 stars if it was updated.
"The Drinking Water Book" is a practical book to understanding water purifiers and bottled water. I was trying to do research on the internet about what each type of water purifier actually did (carbon filter, UV light, distiller, etc.) and how well, but I couldn't find consistent information. If the person was selling the device, the device did practically everything; if they weren't, the device hardly did anything so what you really needed was their device. This book provided clear, easy-to-understand answers to my questions.
The author started by talking about what types of things might be in your water (pathogens, toxic minerals and metals, organic chemicals, radioactive substances, additives) and their risks. He then talked about what is more likely to be in your water in a big city, a small city, or with a well, and about water testing. He discussed different health claims about distilled water, minerals in the water, etc. He then gave some easy ways to improve your tap water without any special equipment.
He then discussed bottled water, vended water, and bulk water stores. He talked about how filters (sediment, carbon filter, redox), reverse osmosis units, distillers, and ultraviolet units work, the different sub-types of each, what they do, and how frequently they need to be changed. He discussed using a combination of the above based on what you determined were the most probable problems with your water.
He evaluated the effectiveness of the different types of water purifiers while in actual use, compared the costs of different methods, discussed the best places to buy a water purifier, and evaluated specific brands (for house, camping, and traveling). He ended by discussing emergency disinfection of water and water storage.
If you're thinking about getting a water purification system or are concerned about your water, I'd highly recommend this book. With the knowledge from this book, you'll probably save the cost of this book through informed future water-related purchases...and you can feel assured you're actually getting what you want rather than having a false confidence based on promotional hype.
A thorough discussion about water filtration and purification. Author Ingram starts by talking about water pollutants. Unfortunately there are thousands of potential water pollutants but he talks about the most common. Pollutants vary by the water source and by geographical region with some regions of the country being prone to certain types of pollutants. His discussion of sources includes municipal water, private well water and purchased water.
Author Ingram then talks about what is in the healthiest water comparing distilled water with mineral waters from natural sources.
He then covers water filtration and purification concepts and techniques noting which pollutants each type of purifier is capable of removing. Apparently filtration and purification is most effective when multiple approaches are used.
Finally he discusses a host of water purification devices showing cost and overall effectiveness.
The subject is covered well. Worth reading gaining awareness about the water you drink and any purifier you may be using.
Has more info on water and ALL the filters they have. What you need after you figure your water type . Also tons of info on filters and at the end his recommendations for best ones in the class like pitcher filter, faucet, whole house and more. Don't think you could get more info than he has. Easy to read and lots of information.
Trying to improve on health, I wanted to find out more about the water we drink and how many pollutants are in it. It's a book about water- what are you expecting? It helped me make decisions about what kind of filtration system to get.
There is certainly good information in here, but this book is encyclopedic and difficult to read. It's not easy to find quick drinking water solutions here.
