During the book i got so discouraged i decided to not even read the book because it was so depressing, but i couldn't stay away, so i read on. The ending was so marvelous it was so worth the suspense
I don't remember this story at all! I cried most of the way through, but the end is great!
This book begins with Darla Jean Randall wondering if she would ever be able to ride again. The local newspapers had called her a heroine when she had saved several horses from a fire a couple weeks before. Karen, her new nurse who had just returned from vacation, asked how her horse was. Then she want to look for Gran at DJ's request, Gran had to pray for her during therapy. Karen returned with the wheelchair saying no one was in the waiting room. Gran met them at the treatment room & DJ told her how bad the treatments hurt, finally DJ told Karen she was ready to go. DJ had looked at her burnt hands once, but now she kept her eyes closed, the pain causing tears to run down her cheeks. Afterward Karen got her back into bed & Gran held a banana Popsicle so she could eat it. It made DJ feel like a baby. Her cousin, Shawna, had made a card for her, but it reminded DJ of her second worse fear, that she wouldn't be able to draw. Shawna had made the card herself, without any help from Gran. Karen announced visitors, & the sounds from the hall made DJ wish she could peek out the door
This book is the perfect ending to a great horse series. Wow! I don't think I ever realized how much I truly enjoyed High Hurdles until reading book 10. It's my favorite book of the whole series. I almost wish this story could have taken place earlier in the series, so that I could discover more about DJ's recovery from the fire accident. Alas, that is not to be. But I certainly enjoyed this finale... and the epilogue is to die for. :-)
