Cornwall has so many lores and legends. In this volume the author introduces you to some of the major ones. The selection is fine, ghost ships, spirits, ghosts, witches, the lizard people but the atmosphere here is a bit too sober and down to earth. The single stories should have been told in an eerier way. Otherwise a good overview. Recommended!

I thought it would be interesting to read a set of tales gathered from a very small area, and see how that produces a sense of the culture of the place. Unfortunately the way the tales were reported was not engaging, so I had to trudge through them rather than enjoy them.

I have Cornish blood in my veins, and this little book spoke to my heart and sang to my soul. There is no magic in this world quite like that of the preserved local legend or folktale.

the author does not really respect the true essence of the stories; instead he creates a collection that actually explain the stories instead of devicing them as they should have been told.

Exactly what you would expect - giants, ghosts, mermaids, and white hares. A nice collection of stories.

This book is a collection of traditional tales from Cornwall that vary from a single paragraph to a few pages in length. Ranging in theme from ghost stories to tales of giants, witches, knockers, and the like, all of them are interesting, but can be a little brief, and I have read versions a couple of the stories in other books that had a better narrative to them. The stories are often written in the style of traditional storytellers so can be a little rambling and repetitive in places. Of the stories in the book, the tales of the' Demon Tregeagle', and 'Duffy and the Devil' are my particular favourites, with the latter being particularly interesting as it is essentially the tale of Rumpelstiltskin set in Cornwall.

Overall, this book is probably best for someone new to Cornish tales, but I feel that most people with an interest in such things should enjoy it on some level.

A nice, concise, yet informative delving into the myths and legends of Cornwall. If you have Cornish blood, or simply a keen interest in folklore, then this book will amuse you and provide food for your imagination. The stories show how myths and legends grow within communities, isolated as they were in the old days upon windswept moors and storm-battered coastal villages.
