A positive approach to dealing with Alzheimer'ss, The Last Dance is a book of courage and inspiration. Susan McLane was a pioneer and public servant advocating for the families and environment of New Hampshire over her twenty-five years in the NH State Senate. The Last Dance tells the story of her struggles with Alzheimer'ss disease, interwoven with memories of a lifetime.
This was given to me by a well-meaning relative. I put it aside for quite a while. I wasn't ready to read a book about a family living with Alzheimer's when my own mother was going through it, but I eventually got beyond my initial hesitancy, and this was worth it. Of course every person's situation is unique, so I couldn't really take anything from the book and apply it to how I'm relating to my mother. But I think that over time, reading other accounts of people struggling with similar issues helps destigmatize the disease, and makes us feel like we're not alone.
As it becomes clear her mother is facing memory challenges, Ann McLane Kuster determines to capture what she can of her mother's life story while there is still time. Weaving her "Fridays with Susie" throughout the family journey of coming to terms with the reality of Alzheimer's, Kuster shares a poignant story of finding the joy in every moment.
