"The Obsessive-Compulsive Trap" is a down-to-earth and informative resource on obsessive-compulsive disorder from a solid Christian perspective. Dr. Mark Crawford teaches how to diagnose OCD and describes the effects it has on more than 120 million people worldwide. Drawing from an expansively clinical background, he illustrates each chapter with clear examples of how men, women and children have found real solutions for dealing with OCD. It's time to get informed and start making changes in society's skewed understanding of this shattering disorder.
I needed this book so much! I have had *no* desire to read this year - I think OCD was keeping my brain locked up where I couldn't enjoy reading anymore. But as soon as I got my hands on this book and looked at the first page, I had an immediate desire to keep reading! It was incredibly helpful to read about the experiences of other people dealing with OCD; to understand what causes it; and learning how to recover from this way of thinking! It's an easy read - short - and well written! Plus, as a Christian, it was so helpful to know that the author was writing from a Christian perspective as well!
I appreciated several aspects of this book: 1) The description of the "need" for symmetry that I experienced growing up was so spot-on that I thought someone was reading my thoughts. 2) The distinction between an interest & an obsession is helpful: just because someone loves something doesn't mean it's a clinical obsession; rather, obsessions include anxiety. 3) The introduction to the cognitive-behavioral therapy approach to fighting OCD was helpful. 4) The section on co-morbidities, including Tourette's was also informative.
In spite of these positive aspects, I have to de-star the book because it wasn't the greatest piece of writing around. Several of the anecdotal examples the author provides overlapped. I think the book could have been 20% shorter w/o losing any effect, even thought it was pretty short as-is.
This book is a must read if you suffer OCD. very very helpful. I highlighted a lot of things and passed it on to my husband, it helps him understand what I go through. It also taught me some ways to rid myself of some compulsions... it just takes time and not giving up.
This book was good, however I have battled with OCD myself and though this gave me some answers it wasn't able to pinpoint the depth of what I was truly going through at the time.
