The German Order of Battle, Vol. 1: Panzers and Artillery in World War II

Rate this book
This reference work details the exact composition of German panzer and artillery forces in World War II and charts the formation and organization of those units throughout that conflict. Based on German military documents and exhaustively researched by a leading expert on military organization, this is a comprehensive directory to a key element of the Wehrmacht and of German military forces.
With an analysis of the evolution of the panzer arm in the 1920s and 1930s, and the conflicting pressures and policies directing that process, this book is an authoritative contribution to our understanding of the forces that played a key role in the Third Reich's drive to conquer Europe.

I'm not going to add a huge review here for this, because none is necessary. The book is exactly what the title says it is, and Nafziger has put together an excellent one. A perfect research tome for my many historical projects, I expect this book to be referenced many times. This book should be in your library if you have interests in WW2 German forces.

The single star off comes from a lack of details on unit operations which could have made this a perfect book, and some missing specialized independent units that really should have been included in this volume. Minor dings, and does not in any way detract from the fine quality of the book. The book was written with the assumption that the reader is well versed in the deployment of the units, and has a strong working knowledge of equipment.

This is not for the feint of heart, and is pretty meaty reading. It is also probably the best book on the topic, so you won't be wasting your time. Enjoy!
