I am becoming addicted to this author. He has a wry, sort of old-fashioned but also very to-the-point style that I find really refreshing. He evokes pictures and people from the past with a mix of melancholy and irony that somehow makes them feel relevant and not dated. This book was an interesting counterpart to Der Geliebte der Mutter, as it provides the father's completely different perspective.

Come facciamo noi tutti.

Hmmm. See oli nüüd üks isemoodi raamat. No ja seal oli ikka kõike, isegi naerma ajas mõni koht, laia silmaringiga Widmer kirjutab realistlikus võtmes ladusalt ja detailiderohkelt sellest, kuidas meie unistused kipuvad tegelikust elust sootuks erinema, kuidas jõulised natuurid võivad elada mõnikord rohkem omaenda loodud illusioonides kui reaalsuses, et tegelik elu toimib teiste seaduste järgi kui kunstis, muusikas või kirjanduses kujutatu ning kuidas pettumine ideaalides (olgu poliitilistes või armuelulistes) võib panna Sind ka kuldses keskeas parajaid lollusi tegema ...

August 2, 2011Best book from a Swiss author I read so far. Quite unorthodox
description of a man's (the father) life in Switzerland's first half
of the 20th century. Need to read the sister book "Der Geliebte
der Mutter" next.

This book has been lying around for years here before I finally sat down and started reading it. At some point I will continue reading Widmer's autobiographic novels...

Listened to audio version read by Urs Widmer. It's brilliant, sad in parts, funny in others and full of life. Best book by a Swiss author I have read for long time.
