Layla Kennedy is a master at hiding. Since the age of 14, she’s been hiding behind a veil of mental illness. Her racing thoughts, unpredictable behavior, obsessive-compulsive issues and panic attacks are, for the most part, controlled by an assortment of medications…that is, when she takes them. On Halloween night, Layla walks a tightrope that lands her in hot water when she impulsively shares a night with a handsome brother in a pirate costume.Jordan Scott, attorney, is immediately captivated by the mysterious Bad Cinderella who danced her way into his room but, like Cinderella, slipped away into the night. Unable to forget the beautiful woman, Jordan is left speechless a month later when he spots her sitting across the courtroom and realizes that she’s paralegal for his nemesis.Unknowingly, Layla and Jordan soon become entrapped in a well-staged plan of blackmail. Unveiling their secrets brings heartache, but ultimately becomes the catalyst for their survival.

Bernice Layton’s Mind Games is a well-written, thoughtful novel with fully developed characters and a plot full of twists and turns. She’s given the story the perfect title because it’s definitely a romantic thriller full of mind games.

The heroine, Layla Kennedy is working on developing her professional career as a paralegal with a major law firm but her personal life is fraught with issues related to her mental instability. When she has a one night stand with a sexy pirate after a Halloween party, she has no idea she’ll be crossing paths with him again a month later. Jordan Scott, the plaintiff’s counsel on a case involving medical malpractice, is floored when he spots his mysterious Cinderella on the defendant’s side of the courtroom. Despite his rumored reputation as a womanizer and “love-them-and-leave-them” brother, he hasn’t forgotten their night together and is eager to take her out on a proper date and explore this tempting chemistry between them.

Despite her reluctance to open herself up to a relationship, Layla succumbs to Jordan’s advances. Pretty soon Jordan and Layla are trapped in a well-staged blackmail scheme – choreographed mind games orchestrated by a jealous and racist colleague and an ex-girlfriend – that put their relationship and their lives in jeopardy. Compounding their issues are Layla’s guilt about her past and her uncertainty about whether Jordan can accept her mental disorder.

Mind Games is a contemporary suspense romance with great pacing, keeping this reader tuned-in and turned on. Even the secondary characters are interesting and fun to get to know. I was particularly swept away by Layla’s tenuous yet protective relationship with her sister, Kacy, and her tumultuous and strained relationship with their mother. The HEA was satisfying and not at all rushed. My mind was at peace!

This was an ok read. I was expecting so much more from this author because her previous book "Lies in Diguise" was an excellent read. This was a good romance/suspense but it didn't grab me. There were parts that were slow. I would definitely rate this book pg-13 in the romance department. Overall Ms. Layton is a good writer and I will continue to buy her books
