House Rules: 10 Guidelines for Christian Homes

Rate this book
What starts at home changes the world.

Home provides us lessons, examples, and scars that affect us for the rest of our lives—and through us, the world.

How do we follow Jesus at home? The Bible tells us about God’s great love for humanity and the sacrificial death of his Son. But it also reveals God’s expectations for what Christian homes should be like. House Rules is intended for believers who seek to apply Jesus’ teaching to our home relationships, marriage frustrations, parenting problems, and conflict resolution.

What values should a Christian home focus on? What lessons should we be teaching each other? What principles inform our conversations with our spouses? What do our kids need to know and do as we try to raise them in the “discipline and instruction of the Lord”?

House Rules calls attention to ten biblical guidelines which, when taught and lived, will change the world.

Very helpful book for anyone starting a family. He takes biblical principles and narrows them down into 10 simple rules for the home with great explanations of why they’re important and how to carry these out. Great read for all families and will continue to reference now and in the future.

Brock and I have been reading through this book together and I liked the way it shared discussion and reflection questions. It helped facilitate good conversations and challenge our behaviors at home. I also liked that he was diligent to use scripture to support his points.

This book has so many good points! The discussion questions sparked a lot of good conversations. Some parts of it read very well, but in other parts the author seemed to go off in the weeds, which was difficult to understand.

I heard this book mentioned on one of my favorite podcasts, Excel Still More by Kris Emerson. I decided that I was going to take my time going through it so I didn't rush through any of the points the author was making. It is most certainly worth a read and contains some toe-stepping insight that could improve all of our homes if we have the courage to acknowledge our shortcoming and resolve to do better! To be better!
The author did a great job keeping each guideline fresh and you could certainly feel his passion for each topic he discussed. I appreciate that he didn't hide his own struggles within these areas which helps the reader relate to the writing and feel connected to the author. He also included questions for consideration at the end of each chapter, which can help the individual reading it make personal connections or use it in a small group setting. Even though the author seems to have young children, the material is relevant to all of our homes!

Excellent application of Biblical principles in the home.

Our young ladies Bible study group has been going through this a chapter a month over the last academic year, and I really enjoyed the discussions this book prompted. My only caveat is that this book was not exactly intended for ladies Bible study. It is written by a husband and father, and thus naturally approaches the ten rules from the perspective of and primary application to a husband and father. Still great material and a good read.

Great practical applications of biblical principles in the home. As a new parent, this was really encouraging to me as I am now raising a child. It’s given me a lot to reflect on regarding how my actions affect others, especially those inside my home, and ways I can make sure I am choosing and encouraging biblical behavior.
