3 Stars ~ Royce's uncanny knack for finding missing people has dominated his life, but years as an FBI special agent looking for missing children has played a heavy toll and he now works privately and never with children. When he gets the call that his godfather has been shot and is dying, he rushes to the hospital, and before the man passes into a coma, he pleads with Royce to find a Sarah Marrs. With the clock ticking, Royce sets out and he tracks Sarah to Winter Falls, where his friend Lucas, formerly from the Detroit PD, is now Sheriff. Someone is after Sarah's son Jeremy, and Royce wonders if he had lead them to Winter Falls. When it's obvious the would be kidnappers are not going to give up, Royce tells Sarah about his godfather's dying wish, and persuades her that it would be safer for her to come with him back to Milwauke.

Sarah's had her share of hard times and her son Jeremy is her only living family. If not for Lucas' faith in Royce, she'd never trust him with her son. Arriving at the hospital, Sarah learns from the dying man that she's his grand-daughter. The man's death doesn't end the threat to her and her son, and Royce fears he'll fail to protect them.

I originally read this one when it was first published in 2003. My rating then was 2 stars, as I read this as a stand-alone. Reading this again as a follow-up to Return of the Lawman with some of the characters recurring, I enjoyed it much more. Somehow the chemistry between Sarah and Royce seems off, but the interactions with the boy brings more depth to this story. It was great to have updates on Lucas and Lindsay, and a hint of what's to come with Evan in the next book set in Winter Falls.

I recall the box of books that was given to me during this time and I can't say that I wasn't grateful for that kindness during a rough patch, but the hell if I can tell you what any of the books were about, this one included. I am pretty sure that they had some decent steamy moments but forgettable, nevertheless.
