A supernatural comedy adventure about a family of ghost hunters – Stranger Things meets Little Miss Sunshine
It's New Year's Eve, and the Rook family are at odds with one another.
Unfortunately, not only is their psychic rival Aurora coming to their hometown, but there's another visitor - Death. The newly appointed Replacement Reaper, who is not grim at all, but a very cute Canadian. He's here to end the world - albeit ethically and politely. This time, Armageddon is coming home.
Can the family overcome their differences in time to stop the ultimate New Year Countdown? Who is Aurora, really? And, is Death single?
PRAISE FOR THE ROOKS SERIES
‘Gabby is one of the funniest writers I know.’ Sarah Millican
‘Very funny. If you like Terry Pratchett, or think gothic fairytales should have more LOLs, ’tis the book for ye.’ Greg Jenner
'I have read this and it is great. Pratchetty fun for all the family.’ Lucy Porter
Eschatological comedy about a dysfunctional family of ghost-hunters. The third book in a tightly linked series and you do have to read them all. The family are entertainingly flawed and ridiculous but still loving, with enjoyable banter, warm relationships, and the whole thing has a strong theme of love and care and human connection that makes it feel pretty cosy for the end of the world. An immensely likeable series, though I wish the editor had done a better job of tightening it up, and a good place to go if you want comic British urban fantasy, or miss early Tom Holt.

It's the end of the world as we know it
'Hey Alexa! Play that song by REM, no not the one about night swimming, the one about the end of the world
We are reunited with the Rooks in all their melodramatic angst and anger, it's like a full on emo revival.
Sham psychic rival Aurora is in town, a new Death is on his way over from Canada and Janusz is still catalogue worthy handsome, so basically a standard day for the members (both physical and other worldly) of the Rook Family
We learn the secrets of the Longest Night and what a night that was, everything clicks together and then KaBOOM! Action, pop culture, ghosts and even more Action! but this time with a capital a and an exclamation mark.
And my hometown of Andover is mentioned in the 18th chapter, woohoo recognition in written form
This was a fantastic sendoff for a great series and I'm absolutely gutted that their will be no follow up but everything must end I guess.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened
A lovely end to a great series. This book might just be my favourite of the three. I always expect a good laugh when reading works by this author but there were some genuinely touching moments between the characters that really got to me. It’s a book about ghosts and demons and celestial executives, but it’s also about the complexity of families. It’s about the roles we’re born into and the roles we choose for ourselves. Grace Barry will forever be one of my favourite literary characters. As sorry as I am to see this series come to an end, it felt like a natural conclusion to the story. Couldn’t recommend this book enough and I’m sure this series will make it back into my rotation in the future.
What a wonderful read and a great end to the series. I adore the Rook family so dysfunctional but so loving and caring if each other, my heart hurt at the end up loved every page.
As I mentioned in the review for Book Two: don't start here. Start with Book One and go in order. This isn't just books set in the same universe, they are a series and lead on from each other.
Every single review for any of Gabby's books compares her to Terry Pratchett, and there's a very good reason; she's got Terry's way of using a funny or absurd situation to make you think about a real life issue. While you can read this as just a funny story about some physics trying to stop the world from ending, there's also amazing stuff here about found family and bravery and holding on to or letting go of the things you need to hold on to or let go of, whether that's your family, your revenge or the demon who's been living in you for decades. And it's really funny.
This is a great series and I'm really looking forward to recommending it to people now that it's complete! I can't wait to see what the next topic Gabby tackles is.
