Curious youngsters will be thrilled to find a "magic flashlight" attached to the upper right corner of the back inside cover of this book [3.5 for me!] that will allow them to see some of the creatures hidden in the Amazon rain forest. Because they're drawn in invisible ink, they won't be visible to the naked eye, but with room lights turned off and the small handy flashlight nearby, they will be able to join Clara, a young girl, and her dog Sparks as they set off on their adventure. Including the opening page, there are 11 different scenes or double-page spreads to explore. Brief facts about the living things in this particular habitat are provided along the way with the animal, plant or even fungus identified in bolded letters. Clara identifies a blue morpho butterfly, a cacao tree, a pink dolphin, and even piranhas among other fascinating inhabitants of the rain forest. Since there is only minimal text and resplendent artwork filling the pages with natural beauty, readers will be filled with a sense of wonder as they move through the book. Add this one to a science classroom library, but don't expect it to remain on the shelf for long.

A young girl and her dog are off to explore the Amazon rain forest. She’s equipped with a backpack and her trusty flashlight. Readers of this book get a small flashlight that emits UV light to follow along. Clara finds birds, monkeys, insects, and all sorts of plants. Readers will get a hint of the incredible diversity and fascinating nature of the Amazon rainforest habitat. Short descriptions of her finds are accompanied by modest cartoon artwork – not as detailed as a some, but fine for a younger audience. When you focus the flashlight on the pages and even the endpapers, additional creatures are illuminated in delicate red outline. This should be a fun draw to settling in for bedtime!
