David Bellingham has a wonderful way of blending the culture, art, and stories of Greek mythology into a great learning tool for those of us who enjoy being pulled into stories as old as time, yet still present in our world today.
This is another basic introduction to Greek mythology that I have been scratching my brain to recall for decades—I still haven't yet located an early 1990s edition to confirm that it is the book I am looking for, but I am 95% certain that it is, as my family still owns three other volumes of his introductions to mythology from the same era.
If this is indeed the book I am recalling, it contains not only retellings of the ancient Greek myths, but key depictions of famous scenes in western art, an incredibly detailed family tree of the Gods (possibly on the endpages), and side commentary on key aspects of ancient Greek history.
I would love to find a copy again to fully confirm and to share with my niblings.
4.5 stars. This was a fun trip down nostalgia lane. I used to pour through this book as a kid at my grandmother’s house, back when I was obsessed with Greek mythology. This is a really good read and a handy refresher as I get into reading more classics. While I remember most of the stories, I also learned some interesting things about the history of poetry and recounting myths, giving me a better appreciation of The Odyssey than I had when I read it.
