This short story about reckless behaviour, lies and deceit will convict and challenge those who talk the Christian talk but are not walking the walk, as well as those who have drifted away from God.
“WATCH OUT!” Grant yells as they again veer across the white line. He leans over and grabs the steering wheel. “Are you trying to get us all killed?”
“Hands off,” Pete snarls as he wrenches the wheel back and revs the engine.
“What’s going on?” Scott asks from the back, as a haze of smoke drifts forward and settles in the air.
“Hey, I can’t see properly, keep that in the……..WHAT’S THAT?” Pete shouts.
The car thuds on impact and something heavy bounces off the side of the bumper.
Pete brakes sharply and there is a screech of tires as the car comes to a juddering stop a little further down the road. The boys in the back loudly complain as they hit their heads on the seats in front. None of them are wearing seatbelts.
Grant pales. “What was that?” he shouts above the continuing music. But he already knows the answer. He had seen the red car, stopped in a layby with its hazard lights flashing lethargically.
Leaving the engine running, Pete is the first to get out. He walks around to the front of his car and surveys the damage.
Grant unbuckles and starts to open his door. He hesitates for a second and apprehensively glances in the wing mirror. His fears are confirmed as he can just make out a large mound in the road behind them. A person is running from the red vehicle towards the mound.
Pete is now at the back of his car but before Grant can get out he is back. He quickly shuts Grant’s half open door on his leg, then runs around to the driver’s side and jumps back in. He is deathly white and panic and fear have entered his eyes.
“We need to get out of here,” Pete mumbles as he turns the volume up impossibly high.
“What did we hit?” asks Daniel. “Turn that racket down, won’t you?”
“I reckon it was a deer,” yells Alex. “At least, it felt like something heavy.”
“Is there a lot of damage?”
“Was it dead?”
The unanswered questions hang in the air and fade away as Pete quickly drives away from the scene, tyres squealing as they spin on the surface of the road."

Natalie Vellacott spent a decade as a police officer in England before swapping her badge for a Bible and heading for Southeast Asia as a Christian missionary. She volunteered on Logos Hope, a giant ship, for 2 years with 400 people from 65 other countries enduring the cultural catastrophes in order to enjoy the exciting adventures.
Natalie began writing in the Philippines when she fell in love with a group of street children addicted to a solvent called Rugby. Having founded a charity to help the boys and draw attention to their plight, she naively entitled her first book and has been trying to get it out of the Rugby Union chart ever since.
Natalie has also dabbled in Christian fiction for children, in the choose your own adventure style, mostly for the benefit of her nephew, Reuben, who is pleased that he takes centre stage.
Natalie is now involved in evangelism in the UK. In 2023, she published a new book about her recent experiences, as well as a series of contemporary short stories based on some of the parables that Jesus told.
