“ Who are you …? ” Nathan wondered aloud, as he gazed out at the approaching enemy. There was not supposed to be a Confederate force for hundreds of miles. And yet … someone was attacking his regiment … “ Present arms ... Aim ... Fire! ”

It’s spring of 1863, and Nathan Chambers and his men from Texas have finally reported for duty with the Union Army, even as General Lee launches an all-out attack. Nathan and his men fight a desperate battle to hold back the rebel juggernaut, dug-in behind the sturdy walls of the Union fortress at Winchester. But Lee intends to annihilate these unexpectedly stubborn defenders before heading North for a showdown with Lincoln’s army at Gettysburg.

During the ensuing melee, several of Nathan’s trusted men become separated from the others and are captured by the enemy. But the horrendous rebel prison in Richmond is ill-prepared to deal with the resourceful veterans from the West, who plot a daring escape.

Meanwhile Evelyn Hanson is in the crosshairs of the Confederate Signal Corps’ anti-espionage unit, whose leaders are determined to take her down, and to murder her quietly when they do. And to ensure their success the Confederates have planted an agent of their own within Evelyn’s spy ring. Can she figure a way to turn the tables on them before it’s too late?
And thanks to Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Tony and the freemen from Nathan’s farm have now joined the army, finding their reception unwelcoming. But they’re determined to prove their fighting prowess and to take their proper place in the forefront of the battle for freedom.

Nathan and Evelyn fall ever deeper into peril as the two warring factions clash at Gettysburg in an epic battle that could decide the entire War .

Chris A. Bennett grew up on the shores of Klamath Lake in southeastern Oregon. For a young boy it was a dream world of water, hills, forests, and abundant wildlife. His love for action and adventure morphed into a lifelong love for books when his Mom read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to the family on a long road trip.

It was routine and normal for the family dinner table discussions to involve history, politics, and anything interesting going on in the world. So, when he attended the University of Oregon it seemed perfectly natural (and easy) to study history and political science. But everyone said you couldn't make a living in those fields, so he decided to try his hand at Computer Science. He's been writing professionally, in the software development business for more than 35 years now.

However, Chris's thirst for adventure never faded and he began to live out his love of history onto the pages of his first book, Road to the Breaking. Once he started writing he just couldn't stop and the result is The Road to the Breaking series; an epic journey across a young nation seething with debauchery, brutality, corruption, and political intrigue, unwittingly on the brink of an unimaginable disaster: the American Civil War.

Chris currently lives near Seattle with his wife Patricia. His three adult children Nick, Rachel, and Josh also live in the Puget Sound area.

Intriguing and Action Packed

Loved the integration of Nathan, his men, Harry, and the special women in Richmond with the historical Civil War battles. This was a great read and page turner depicting the horrors and struggles of two armies seeking victory. This was C Bennett's best in the series to date.

Excellent Read,

This Civil War series is right at the top of my "like list", along with Ginny Dye's series. The same conflict view-ed from two different individuals. Mr. Bennett's separation of fact from fiction is especially interesting reading at the end of each volume. I highly recommend this set of books!

Since reading the first book, I am now on #9. Can't put them down. I usually read a book, then skip to another author, but this series catches you and you are hooked! The shift to different characters breaks up the plot to keep things fresh and interesting. From the American Frontier to the Civil war, can't wait to see the rest of the series. I usually read a book in a single sitting, sometimes two sittings, these are guaranteed to make you not put the book down.

Another reread for me. Lots of action in this book- Gettysburg, Antietam, and smaller battles like Winchester as well as Zeke, William and Philipe being captured and sent to Libby prison. I loved the “angel on the mountain” as it probably happened not many miles from where I live. Sad ending with Georgie and Jamie dying together as well as Stan and Harry severely injured … anxious for the conclusion
