A lift the flap book.
Elmer and Bird play hide and seek. Elmer finds all sorts of friends but can't find Bird. Readers may be surprised by where Bird was hiding all day.

Elmer the elephant was a one of my favourite children’s books from my childhood, so when I stumbled across ‘Elmer’s Hide - And - Seek’ I picked it up with great delight!!

The book enables the child to be interactive by enabling the child to help Elmer to try and find Bird through the game of hide and seek by lifting flaps on each page to see where bird is hiding. Each page shows Elmer trampling through different locations and different hiding places that Bird could be. On Elmer’s Hunt to find Bird, he finds different animals hiding behind the flaps allowing the child to familiarise with different names of animals and being able to recognise colour by giving the reader (child) a question, "Bird? Is that you behind the pink rock’’. Towards the end of the book, surprisingly, Elmer changes the question, and asks “Is that spider tickling behind the ear?”, only to discover Bird was hiding behind his ear. Bird questions whether they can play hide and seek again.

Hide and seek is a popular game and I think this book explores a child’s imagination by thinking of unusual places that Bird could hide by describing the hiding places, which gives a sense of direction as to where Bird could be. This book uses repetitiveness and consistency right until an unexpected question follows from Elmer. This gives the child a sense of excitement as Bird is hiding in an unusual hiding place compared to all the other places that Elmer was looking for Bird. I would suggest this book would be for Reception or Key stage 1 groups due to the visual language used (describing through colour).

This book could be read to the class in an interactive way by nominating different children to lift the flaps whilst the teacher reads. This would encourage the children to be part of the game. Reading this aloud to the class could help children differentiate between colours of objects that Bird is meant to be hiding behind. The use of repetition within the book makes the child feel part of the hide and seek game, which in turn allows the child to follow on with the sentences as they know what to expect from a new page. One of the activities that the children could do following on from reading this book is to verbally identify different animals in the story, or take part in a colouring exercise where they colour the different objects in the story by their associated colour, for example “pink rock” and “orange log”.

This is my one-year-old's first favorite book. Everyday, at least twice a day he comes toddling up to me clutching this book and signing "bird?" He is completely wearing out the peek-a-boo flaps on the pages, and is absolutely delighted when my husband and I read it out loud to him together (my husband does a different voice/accent for each "hiden" animal). I highly recommend this book for anyone with a small child. Colorful, interactive, and just FUN!
