Meet Dudley—he's a proper little monster! Help him choose what to have for breakfast, blow his nose and brush his teeth, as he sings, sniffles, and scoffs his way through the day from morning to bedtime! Story time becomes a fun, interactive experience as parents read the story of Dudley and act out the scenes in their best monster voice with this innovative book that does double duty as a hand puppet.
I came across to this book in my SBT1 when my mentor read it using lots of expression, which made the story enjoyable. The simple text and illustrations is visually captivating and funny. The children, as well as myself, found it amusing and hugely enjoyed listening to it and would definitely use this book in SBT2. My mentor acted out the parts using his monster voice and used the hand puppet to encourage children to participate and help Dudley his way through the day from morning to bedtime. This book is suitable for children in Early Years to Key stage 1.
Some may say that the picture book industry has become somewhat mediocre in recent times, but Sam Lloyd's books never fail to shatter this illusion!
He successfully uses simple text with killer illustrations to create visually captivating and hilariously funny stories for younger readers (and those adults that will admit to it!)
His books almost always have a novelty element to them, this example being a hand puppet (Dudley!) that is used to stimulate child participation, making it an excellent book to read aloud with a small group. His focus on a single, endearing character draws the children into the text and has caused many memorable moments when I have read it aloud to a group (on one page the children are told to tell Dudley off for being naughty. At this point one cheeky toddler shook her head and sighed, 'Dudley, wait until your Father gets home!')
Would definately recommend this read and ALL of Sam Lloyd's work (check out 'What Colour Are Your Knickers'!)All we need now are more original Children's authors...
Dudley is a naughty monster with no manners he never says please or thank you and is always noisy, the only time when he is almost quiet is when he is sleeping. This book can promote discussions about manners and how we should behave. This is a great book for children and adults, it has a puppet in the middle of the book so it is very captivating and engaging( If you are not afraid of putting on a silly monster voice). This book is recommended for Early Years but I think children up to ages 6 and 7 would still love this book.
