The Kashmir dispute has dominated Indo-Pakistan relations ever since independence, fifty years ago. It has also played a major part in the genesis of the Sino-Indian boundary dispute. In this award-winning book, Alastair Lamb examines the history of this dispute.
Alastair Lamb was a Chinese-born British diplomatic historian who authored several books on the Sino-Indian border dispute and the Indo-Pakistani dispute over Kashmir. He also worked in archaeology and ethnography in Asia and Africa.
Alaistair Lamb is one of the biggest Pro Pakistani advocates of Kashmir. He is an scholar has done his best to prove the accession a fraud, the invasion of afaridies during 47 a indigenous revolt and so-on and so forth. There are very clever omission and selection of facts. Read to know one side of the story.
It is good at the beginning. One gets to know about the formation of the state i.e. how the dogra dynasty brought such diverse demographic and geographic regions under one rule. But the later chapters it gets lost in the accusations and blame game , not much of actual events are presented. Like the period 1970-90 , hardly we get to know what was happening in kashmir apart from few lines describing organisations and one-off events.
Bias - Read if want to know Pakistan's point of view. I will have to read a different author for a different version i guess ;)
Kashmir a disputed territory is a book explaining the genesis of kashmir problem unbiasedly. Alaister Lamb has described in detail how British treatment of northern areas since 1890 had direct consequences on Kashmir dispute. Alaister also explain sir Dixon own formula, is the one of the practical solution for solving the kashmir. The formula also corroborate with geographical and theological realities.
His analysis of the problem is very insightful.Good read, though. I wish we could have a peaceful solution to this colonial saga for betterment of kashmiri people and sub continent as whole.
