aka Samantha Beckett

Jolie Kramer began her career in 1975 as a reader in the Comedy Development department for 20th-Century Fox. She left Fox in 1977 to go on location with THE DEER HUNTER. She then worked as an auditor, associate producer and producer on such projects as WHEN SHE SAYS NO for CBS, BEULAH LAND for NBC, GREAT AMERICAN TRAFFIC JAM for NBC and CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR for Jozak Productions. In 1987 she became head of development for the McCarran Film Corp., overseeing a roster of twelve feature films. As a screen writer, she’s had a series idea purchased by Cinemax, and has worked as a script consultant on more than 50 screenplays. Currently, her screenplay APACHE TEARS was optioned by Northern Lights Productions in Canada.

Jo Leigh's first Silhouette novel, SUSPECT, was awarded BEST FIRST SERIES BOOK by Romantic Times Magazine, garnered the 1994 ROMANCE WRITER OF THE YEAR award from Pike’s Peak RWA, and was a finalist for BEST ROMANTIC SUSPENSE NOVEL OF 1994 by Romance Writers of America. Her first Temptation novel, ONE WICKED NIGHT was a finalist for BEST SHORT CONTEMPORARY NOVEL OF 1998 by Romance Writers of America. She was invited to write one of the launch books for the Harlequin imprint, Blaze, with her book GOING FOR IT! Her 2006 Blaze RELENTLESS was a RITA finalist for BEST ROMANTIC SUSPENSE.

She also ghost-wrote GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL DOLL – THE ANNA NICOLE SMITH STORY for Barricade Books.

Jo teaches writing at workshops across the country and on-line, and is a frequent guest speaker at writing conferences. Her tape on Advanced Plotting from the Dallas Romance Writers of America conference is the best selling tape in RWA’s history.

Jo lives in an incredibly rural area of Utah where her many rescue dogs have room to run and play and her rescue cats are determined to win the International Shedding Award. She spends an inordinate amount of time reading about how the brain works, listening to music and trying not to kill the basil.

Jo's husband died of cancer on 13 June 2008, three years after they married, and whose medical bills are astronomical. Authors, editors, and bloggers have all donated a mess of items, from books to critiques to mentoring sessions to offer an item for the auction to benefit author Jo Leigh.

Okay, okay, I admit it! It's been a long while since I've picked up a Harlequin series romance book, for several different reasons. Thankfully, I broke my cold spell and devoured Jo Leigh's NOT-SO-SECRET BABY in about four hours! I'd almost forgotten how good Intrigue books are, but believe me-I'll never forget again!

Jenny Granger was a barely legal age cocktail waitress in Las Vegas when she fell under the spell of C. Randall Todd. A man who oozed charisma, charm, and wealth, Jenny allowed herself to be blinded by Todd and his bling-the money that had never seemed all that important while working her way through college suddenly bought her clothes, jewelry, and a limited peace of mind. Todd didn't push her into a romantic relationship; instead, Jenny willingly took the jump on her own, and by then, it was too late. Because Todd, once he had a grip on something or someone, wasn't a man to let go. By force, intimidation, and mental cruelty, he possessed a grip on Jenny that she couldn't shake-until, that is, she enlisted the aid of one of Todd's henchman, Nick Mason, and made her escape.

Now her life is peaceful. She's a single mother with a young son, living in a quiet town where no one knows who she really is or where she came from. Life is the way Jenny wants it-until she wakes one night and discovers that her son, Patrick, is gone, and that Todd has found her hiding place. Now her innocent son is in the clutches of a man who makes Mafia mob bosses look tame by comparison, and Jenny has no choice but to return to Vegas and the ministrations of a man who wants only to make her pay.

Nick Mason is still one of Todd's right-hand men, along with a real baddy named Henry Sweet. Todd is determined to rear his son, Patrick, in his own image as an ungodly-wealthy casino owner and arms dealer, and to make Jenny suffer for her betrayal. It's up to Nick to help Jenny avoid Todd and his sadistic temper, at the same time rescuing Patrick from a life of terror and intimidation. But with his own heart on the line, not to mention his top-secret reason for being in the employ of C. Randall Todd for these past three years, Nick is running out of time-and running out of reasons to avoid Jenny and the emotions she stirs up in him.

Jo Leigh writes nail-biting romantic suspense with heart-pounding emotions and dialogue. Her characters in NOT-SO-SECRET BABY are all so real that you can't help being swept up in this world of love, danger, and passion that she's created. I'm certainly glad I broke my series romance cold spell and picked up this super hot book!

Years ago, Jenny was the girlfriend of a billionaire criminal, until she fell in love and secretly became pregnant by one of his henchmen. Nick, the father of her child, never knew she was pregnant, but he cared enough about her to help her flee to a new town with a new identity and a new life - even while he refused to leave his position.

Now Jenny has been found and dragged back to her former life. She desperately needs to keep the secret that endangers herself and her son: that Patrick is Nick's child, rather than the son of her crime boss ex. Though she loved Nick once upon a time, he's risen in the ranks and gotten harder and colder, and she no longer trusts him. But Nick, too, has a secret: he's an undercover agent who's trying to bring down a criminal with a terrorist plot. And now he has to worry not only about saving the country from a deadly weapon, but he also has to worry about a son he never knew he had, and a woman he never stopped loving.

I did enjoy this book, though it's not the type of story I normally like. I generally dislike anything that smacks of a hostage-type situation - I find that when characters are trapped in a situation where they're forced to play certain roles, it's very hard to learn who they really are. I need a certain level of peace and freedom and safety in a book, and an opportunity to see the characters in their normal environments (even if they're under pressure to solve a mystery), if I'm to get inside their minds and appreciate their personalities.

That said, for a hostage book this wasn't bad. I didn't feel like I truly got to know Jenny and Nick, but what I did see of them was quite likeable. The suspense and tension was well-crafted, and I found Todd to be a chilling villain.

Not one that I'll read again, but not at all bad. 3 - 3.5 stars.
