He was a researcher of the nature of consciousness using mainly isolation tanks, dolphin communication, and psychedelic drugs, sometimes in combination.

If you've ever seen the movie "Altered States", it was loosely based on this guy. Very loosely. This is a fun book about a scientist who's also a little nutty.
