In the book The American Indian Wars, authors John Tebbel and Keith Jennison provide a general summary of Native American conflict during the colonial era and in American History. The book provides essential information for a book writing over a long span of time but does tend to be more sympathetic to the Native American perspective. While this may be true in most aspects, I do think that Tebbel, could provide more background on shortcomings of the indigenous people, especially their inability to cooperate with one and other to fight Europeans and Americans off of their lands. Despite this criticism, I found this book to be a good source of knowledge and starting point for anyone wanting to know more about historic plights of Native American societies across history and the land they lived upon. The author also provides approriate use of images and photos to enhance the information he provided. Overall, I give the book three and a half out of five stars, but am rounding it down to three because the book is a little too "texty" or bland. None the less, a good starting point for people looking to know more.
I'm not sure it's necessary to be a historian to tell this take as some others have thought here, but it certainly would have helped. This history is really important but this telling is really frustratingly bland and the tone can be disrespectful with present day sensibilities. Either way I couldn't finish this. It was okay.
Not really balanced, found it to be a bit dry, and well, as it's about war, not really my thing. Might make my opinion a bit lacking as I'm not really into these kinds of books.
Found this in a pleasant used bookstore in Long Beach just down the street from LBCC's main campus...has some of the biases to be expected about history books on American Indians written by white Americans before we entered the era of modern historical scholarship...
Not a bad book. It feels a bit biased at times and not very organzied. Some details that don't feel too important are hammered in while others are just glanced.
