Mott A Fable is the first volume of The Pulsifer Saga, by Wm. Michael Mott. Fantasy fiction has a new and outrageous hero...or anti-hero. He's not politically correct, overly heroic, or even overly endearing...but he is uproariously entertaining. Meet Calim Pulsifer-thief, rogue, womanizer, and confidence man-and, in spite of having earned the enmity of wizards, warriors, and women, always his own worst enemy. Extricating himself from one outrageous misadventure after another in his quest for vengeance and survival, the outcast Calim Pulsifer leaves a trail of mayhem and mirth across and beneath a frozen, monster-haunted world. Political correctness goes out the window as the ultimate trickster and adventurer takes the stage. Fantasy-fiction readers and role-playing fans alike will find these novels provide a thrilling, belly-laughing reading experience.

An outrageously entertaining pastiche of Jack Vance's Cugel the Clever, following the picaresque misadventures of Pulsifer, AKA the Velvet Knife - thief, scoundrel, ladies man and consummate bluffer. Driven by greed and revenge, he perfectly captures Cugel's crafty spirit of whimsical arrogance and reckless adventure, barely managing to escape death and worse time after time through some combination of bluster, audacity and dumb luck. Set in a far-future, dying Earth that has been slowly freezing for millennia, the story unfolds in a world teeming with outlandish dangers, including a bewildering variety of bizarre and deadly monstrosities, both natural and unnatural. Quite a fun, action-packed read, highly recommended to fantasy and Jack Vance fans in particular!

I can’t even explain how good this book is. This is a non stop thrill adventure fantasy. Jack Vance at his best is the only writer I can think of for this kind of story. Pulsifer is a rogue who can’t get out of his own way. I was attached to this protagonist no matter what he did. Excellent world building ( an overused cringe phrase in my opinion) but so true. The writing style is superb. I had no idea I would like this as much as I did. Old school fantasy fans will love this offering. New fantasy fans should enjoy it as well. On to the second book.

Reliable reviewer Paul Di Filippo gives this Vancian novel and its sequel high marks:

"These are the best books in the mode of Vance that I have yet encountered. Rich in invention and plot, beautifully written, inspired by Vance but not parodic or slavishly imitative, they will satisfy any fan of the Master."

Available as a $7 Kindle. I'll be trying this one soon. Stay tuned.
The NY Times Magazine Vance article he mentions is first-rate. If it's paywalled, PM me for a copy: I'm a subscriber.
