Olav Velthuis has worked as Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Konstanz and has been a Visiting Scholar at Princeton University and Columbia University. Currently he writes about economic affairs for the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant.

Interessant perspectief op hedendaagse kunstenaars die op verschillende manieren aan de slag gaan met het fenomeen van de economie, waarmee zij reflecteren op uiteenlopende economische kwesties of waarmee zij de betekenis van economische concepten en processen onderzoeken en becommentariëren. Ook haalt Velthuis kunstenaars aan die zich niet beperken tot reflectie, maar een eigen, alternatieve economie ontwerpen, inclusief nieuw geld. De kern van Velthuis betoog is dat deze kunst, die hij verzamelt onder de noemer van 'imaginaire economie', niet alleen als kunstvorm, maar ook als bron van kennis bestaansrecht heeft. Fijn geschreven met interessante invalshoeken en bovendien een leuke aanvulling op alle boeken die zich uitlaten over confrontaties tussen kunst en economie zoals het functioneren van de kunstmarkt. Met dit boek horen we eens hoe een rits aan hedendaagse kunstenaars zelf denkt over economie en het bestaansrecht van kunst en het kunstenaarschap daarbinnen.
