Joannides (art history, U. of Cambridge, UK), who is a specialist on Renaissance graphic art, has written two lengthy essays and all the entries for this fine catalog of an exhibition of drawings by Raphael and his contemporaries held at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 2002 and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille, France in 2003. The essays discuss the practice of drawing in Raphael's time and the fascinating life and collecting career of Jean-Baptiste Wicar, whose third collection of old masters went to the museum in Lille in 1834. The volume is not indexed. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
