Recalls the 1972 showdown between Hockey's superpowers--the world champion team from the USSR and the stars of the NHL--in eight fiercely contended exhibition games
This is a comprehensive look at the Summit Series. With chapters alternating between game recaps and related events, it goes into quite good detail of what happened over the tournament. MacSkimming also talked to several of the Canadian players a few decades later to get their perspective, which was nice, though it would have been interesting to get some Russian players' input as well. It also served as the basis for the CBC film about the Series, and several lines from the movie are directly taken out of the book, so each serves as a good compliment to the other.
Great read. I’ve always been curious about the details of this series and Cold War definitely pays off. Lots of details. Good stories. Characters instead of charicatures.
I read this book twice so I would not forget the moments of this great confrontation between these hockey powers. The book takes you right into each lockeroom, bench, hotel room, player homes, team bus, plane, bars.. You feel everything the players felt because nothing is kept out. Excellent for any hockey fan.
