2.5 Stars Lots of potential, but it didn't meet my expectations
I enjoyed the beginning and ending of the story. However, I feel like the middle part could benefit from more diverse content to keep the reader engaged. I believe incorporating more action scenes, especially with the A.I, would make the story more thrilling. (Things got too repetitive in the middle.) Additionally, I think it would be better if the narrator didn't change her voice for the male MC, it sounded very unnatural. Overall, I see a lot of potential in the story, and with some minor improvements, it could be a truly immersive experience.
***Thank you to NetGalley, Lora Leigh, and Macmillan Audio for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***
It had so much potential but it fell flat for me for several reasons. I enjoyed the FMC she was likeable. The MMC was overly unlikeable and overly possessive/controlling, like so much it became cringe where he was way worse than an alpha a-hole. I love smut and alpha a-holes, but the way he's put about is a huge turn off. I also disliked that the female narrator did the MMC's parts in a strange "deeper?" voice. It would've been better if the narrator used her own voice or they had a male narrator to do the MMCs voice. Then the story felt redundant at certain parts, pretty repetitive that it didn't keep my full interest the entire time. The premise has so much potential but this execution wasn't it for me, I'm hoping it's better for you.
I received this ARC in audiobook format from NetGalley and Macmillan Audio to listen/review. All of the statements above are my true opinions after fully listening to this audiobook.
The audiobook started with young Poppy rescuing teen Jack, a bit beaten and cold in an alleyway.. years later they got in touch again when Poppy was a teen and Jack was past teen, but a trauma occurred. Then many years later, Jack is doing a job and somehow involves Poppy but he can't tell her about it. The attraction between them continues but they don't act on it until they were adults. Once they started, they couldn't stop.
The story and audiobook was okay. I don't like that Jack avoided meeting Poppy just to give her space all these years then as soon as he laid eyes on her, he became possessive of her and expected her to show he owned her by proudly displaying his bite marks on her neck. Luckily she was defiant and made her own decisions. The ending was unexpected. There's AI involved and there's killing, just not gruesome.
Thank you Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the complimentary audiobook! Thank you Bramble Romance for the opportunity to read and review!
One more shot. The last Lora Leigh book I read I said would be my last. Well, here I am again, and I've got to say I like this one. The formula of lots of sex and little plot has changed a little, okay a very little, but there is definitely more plot to this one. For a sex filled escape with a good suspense plot "Play Dirty" is a great read.
Jack Lee Bridger was an abused fourteen-year-old when Poppy found him hiding from his abusive father. She showed him the only kindness he had ever known. He watched her grow but was unable to protect her when she needed it most. Now Jack is determined to protect her, even if it means with his life.
Jack is back home in Barboursville, West Virginia. a disgraced ex-SEAL. But a SEAL with a mission vital to national security. But to accomplish his mission Jack knows he is going to break Poppy's heart.
Poppy Octavia Porter has been in love with Jack since she was a seven-year-old and found him hiding behind the garbage cans. That love just wouldn't die even when he all but ignored her and left for the Navy. Now he's back and Poppy is determined to make Jack see her as a woman full grown and ready for him as a man.
Jack's mission is dangerous and involves people Poppy cares about and he can't tell her anything about it. The first part is making Poppy fall for him, that was the easy part. Maybe too easy. She is now in danger because of him and the only thing he can do is complete his mission and pray she will forgive him when it's all over.
My thanks to the Publisher and Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.
I came real close to giving up halfway through because of how much talk there was about his mission and AI (SO much AI talk it almost turned into a tech case study) and so much subplot but it was short enough to be over with it in an evening. now let me explain why this is going straight to book jail for the rest of its life 👹
- tied her up to the bed and started 👅 her BEFORE she woke up ‼️‼️ the police has been dispatched to their location
- 50% chapters at either one's place and 50% chapters at the bar. they barely set foot any other place it's like the budget was too low to get another location except it's not a movie but a book 🤑
quotes time, let's pull out the receipts 📜🧐
- the line "like a ninny.” do I need to say more
- "She’d expected him to grip her arm and tug her after him; men liked to do that where women were concerned. Instead, he surprised her again by holding out his hand to her." you don't understand he's a GENTLEMAN for not dragging her out by her hair 🔥‼️
- “I’m fucking tired of this argument.” He dropped his hand from her neck. “Wash that crap off." yes girl hurry remove your (neck) makeup asap‼️ bro acting like her pimp🙏
- "Unlike most women, she truly didn't believe her lover needed to live in her pocket or her in his." GUYS she is NOT like other girls 🤗
- "Poppy, I could bathe in the blood of anyone that dared to attempt to hurt you and step out of it feeling good about myself and what I'd done." the only good quote in there tbh I smiled a lil
- "Grief could be a terrible thing, Poppy acknowledged after-" 🫨 an intellectual!! a philosopher!!! inspirational quote of the day💯😩
as always, no hate to the author, to each their own and this just wasn't my own........
I am honestly so sad about how much I disliked this book. I dnf’d about a quarter of the way through because of the plot, which was going in every direction, the lack of knowledge about what the military does, and the lack of chemistry between the characters. I was so excited for this book because it is the first ARC I’ve received that is more of a dark romance but sadly, it just not the right fit for me. I can normally look past minor things in a dark romance but there was just way too many inconsistencies for me to enjoy reading. I also did not love the country accent that the narrator was doing, I am from KY and it just fell flat for me. Thank you NetGalley and MacMillian Audio for this ARC.
Did I make you uncomfortable? I shouldn’t. Sex is FUN! We should all compare notes . If you can teach me a new trick I’m game.
I have a dirty little secret…
Reading these steamy romances really get me going and my husband has been one lucky lad this week.
Poor Craig usually sleeps with one eye open given my love for thrillers but this week he’s bouncing around with a little pep in his step.
Well well well, get ready babe because I just concluded one heck of a banger and there is only ONE thing on my mind…
Play Dirty
Think 50 shades only much much better . This book right here will have you pulling at your bed sheets .
The steam is there, the plot isn’t corny and I’m completely satisfied 😉

I admittedly really liked most of this book but the AI piece just didn’t feel right. The end of the book really threw me off and felt clunky. I realize it’s supposed to be a cliffhanger but it just left me super confused. Which is actually sad considering the romance piece between the two main characters is steamy and adorable.
🌀Synopsis Poppy and Jack have a tangled past. When he was starving as a kid, she saved his life. He had a rough home life, to say the least and she welcomed him into her family. They cared for him and got him a place to stay until he joined the military. Then, when there was a killer in town she got drunk and got herself in trouble. It was his turn to save her. He stayed away but always kept tabs on her and came home from time to time. Now, there’s an issue in his hometown and he must return again. This time, he’s going to see her. She’s unknowingly involved in something and he’s going to get to the bottom of it to get her out. He can’t stay away from her now though and it doesn’t take long for their true feelings to come to the surface.
I have thoroughly and unashamedly loved this author in the past. The distant past. I wonder if I would still like any of those books I read 10 years ago 🤷♀️ So this book...
Generally unlikeable MMC, virginal, inconsistent FMC. Relatively predictable story with some plot points that just didn't make sense.
Cool epilogue though. I'd almost read the next one just for the AI storyline (which only got good at the end)
I have loved Lora Leigh's books for awhile and this one was no exception. This book combined so many tropes including military, second chance, science fiction and friends to lovers. Poppy and Jackson have known each other since they were children. They were bonded by their shared traumas. For years Jackson stayed away but now he's back to protect Poppy. He also has to help capture a human like AI with an unknown purpose. The ex-seal isn't fazed when he has to take down several very bad people along the way. He's only sad that he'll have to hurt Poppy by keeping a few secrets and taking down people she thought she could trust. The spicy scenes were exceptionally written as always. This is not a sweet laid back romance. It is darker and all the better for it. *Trigger warning* There are several mentions of an attempted sexual assault throughout the book. I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
What did I just read? The storyline was so confusing. I had no idea what mission Jack was on and I had no idea what all of the AI talk was about. I was confused the whole time. The relationship between Poppy and Jack was just weird. He was an egotistical, controlling man. He treated her like she was property. The pet names he called her were very cringy. The book was also full of very vivid and descriptive sex scenes that I wasn't expecting. I felt that this storyline was a little overdone. I don't typically choose to read those types of books, so I wasn't expecting it to be so spicy.
DNF at 23%. I had a hard time getting into this one but I gave it a real chance, I swear! I wasn’t feeling anything for the characters and the narration wasn’t a favorite of mine. But then a brother was talking about his sister’s sex life? Then the man who came to rescue her from assault basically assaults her? No, I’m done. Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to review!
This is the first book in a new series by Lora Leigh. I haven’t read any of her other books before and thought picking this one up would be a good place to start.
I wish I liked this one more. It was steamy and spicy and had a palpable chemistry between the main characters, it was just a little too much for me…I have no doubt that there is an audience for this book, it just isn’t me. I struggled with the relationship between Jack and Poppy. There is no build up of them getting together, he just comes back to town and they are suddenly together. Poppy, as someone who has past trauma, really opens up to Jack very quickly. She holds him up as her hero and that is evident. Jack, for his part, does everything he can to keep her safe.
The story line outside the romantic relationship was a little bit of a stretch, though it did keep me guessing and the twist at the end I didn’t see coming. In the mood for some spice with a dash of real life heroes? This one is for you!
“you were always more to me than anyone else would ever be." •
Poppy has been in love with Jack since she was a kid, and now that he’s return home fresh off retirement as a Navy SEAL, she’s ready to finally go after what she’s wanted for all these years: him.
in order to pull off his secret operation, Jack’s cover has to be believable. starting a romantic relationship with Poppy is the natural option. they’ve both wanted each other forever, and everyone knows it. they aren’t kids anymore, and it was only a matter of time.
while his feelings for Poppy are real, it’s not what truly brought Jack home. the rumor is he’s into some nefarious jobs as a skilled and disgruntled veteran-for-hire. and it’s his job to make people believe it while he runs his undercover mission. when all is finally revealed, will Poppy forgive the lies and deceit to be with the only person she’s ever loved? •
this and that: ♡ artificial intelligence ♡ childhood friends-to-lovers ♡ dual pov ♡ girl-next-door ♡ family dinners ♡ motorcycles ♡ Navy SEALs / veterans ♡ open door ♡ romantic suspense ♡ small towns ♡ undercover missions ♡“you’re mine”
Jack is a broody ex-Navy SEAL. Poppy is your typical good girl/girl next door. She protected him when they were younger, so he vows to keep her safe from everyone as they grow up. Jack not a good guy, but will do anything to protect Poppy. Poppy and Jack have been “friends” from afar, but now that she is grown, Jack no longer wants to keep his distance.
I was quite disappointed with Play Dirty. This is the first book in a new series, but I’ve read many a books by Lora Leigh. I did not quite buy the romance/chemistry between Jack and Poppy. It just felt really forced, and Jack came off kind of creepy to me. I also found the AI plot line a little strange especially what was said in the epilogue.
I got an ARC copy of the digital book and the audiobook. I’m not picky about narrators. However, I could have done without her changing her voice for the male characters. Also the “southern” accent was cheesy as hell. 😬🫣
Thank you to Netgalley and Publishers for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
In this scintillating novel, the author masterfully crafts a tale that lingers in the mind, primarily for its sultry and sensuous scenes that ignite the pages. The portrayal of passion is vivid, creating an immersive experience for readers seeking a steamy and alluring narrative.
What sets this book apart is its seamless navigation between different time periods, creating a rich tapestry of events that span years. The evolution of the story, both in terms of plot and character development, adds layers of complexity that keep the reader eagerly turning the pages.
Within this narrative, the spectrum of events unfolds, encompassing both the positive and the challenging. The interplay of these elements contributes to the story's depth, making it a multifaceted exploration of desire, love, and the consequences of choices.
However, it's the exploration of reasons behind each twist and turn that truly elevates this work. The author skillfully peels back layers, revealing the motivations that drive the characters and shape the course of the narrative. This focus on the 'why' adds a thought-provoking dimension, prompting readers to reflect on the intricacies of human nature and the profound impact of decisions.
In essence, this book is more than just a collection of hot scenes and a chronicle of events—it's a journey into the complexities of passion, time, and the profound reasons that underpin our lives. A compelling read for those who appreciate a blend of steamy romance and a thoughtfully evolving storyline.
I love a dark romance as much as the next, but this guy had nothing going for him. There wasn't enough chemistry between the characters to justify the amount of possessiveness displayed by the MMC and the way he spoke to the FMC gave me major ick.
I also have to note there was far too much discussion of AI for a romance novel, and while I will not claim to know anything about military functions, I think the author could have done a bit more research into how their operations function.
Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy in exchange for my honest review.
Play Dirty by Lora Leigh has a lot of potential. The book starts with Poppy and Jack as children and teens. They trauma bond over a near rape. Then he goes off to the service and comes back to town with the intention of using her to get close to his target. It had a little suspense and mystery revolving around the person or persons that Jake was investigating. The story had heat although in some parts I wished it hadn’t.
“Poppy, I could bathe in the blood of anyone that dared to attempt to hurt you and step out of it feeling good about myself and what I’d done”. Probably the best line in the entire book, and it’s used twice. This line was actually pretty hot. They had great chemistry and I wish the author had used that to build on the romance aspect.
I gave the book multiple chances and almost stopped reading multiple times. The first was after an attempted assault and then Jack fools around with her. Like what?? The storyline was very confusing and adding in AI. I wanted more. More something. The romance itself was flat. He comes back and the trauma bond from the beginning is still there and bam, they are a couple. The AI thrown in was confusing and hard to follow.
I liked Poppy and felt she had spunk. She wasn’t afraid to defend herself, no matter what. I like alpha males but Jack fell flat in other ways that he just came across as overbearing.
Narrator was good.
Tropes Ex military Friends to lovers Alpha male
It definitely wouldn’t be a book I would reread or need to add to my physical collection. I would probably try the next in the series but wouldn’t put it high on my list. The story repeats and lines are repeated several times
Unfortunately, this was a DNF for me around 50%. I wanted to like it, but it was a struggle. Let’s discuss, shall we?
For starters, this seems all over the place. Jacks mission is about drug cartels but it’s also about AI that’s human like, but then someone else might start trafficking girls…y’all, I’m sort of lost. Also, somehow it’s not suppose to be noticeable that all of these ex-navy seals are relocated to this small town and things start going down, like a plane for instance. And to be frank, when they describe the AI as being passable as human, I started slowly drifting away. Next, the FMC and MMC. The FMC, so far, has mostly been annoyingly naive about the world around her. She’s in her 20’s and still a V after holding on to hope of being with Jack, who she may or may not have fallen for at 7. Our MMC is a major alpha-hole. Listen, I LOVE me some dark romance and a possessive, morally grey MMC, but Jack wasn’t it. He’s possessive, he’s morally grey, but he is also unlikeable. It almost felt like they tried too hard to make him unlikeable. Then, when these two finally get together and she loses her V card, it was anticlimactic. No pun intended. He also started with an@l play on her first time. Damn, Jack, let a girl warm up with some P in V action before you throw her into the intermediate level stuff. Lastly, the narration didn’t do it for me. The accents weren’t great and I did not love the narrators portrayal of Jacks (or other male characters) voice. It was a distraction.
I was hopeful for this one, especially as my first advanced copy, but I just couldn’t do it.
Thanks to NetGalley, Lora Leigh, and MacMillan Audio for the chance to preview this audio book. All expressed thoughts are solely that of my own.
Play Dirty is the first book in an all-new series from author Lora Leigh. Jack is a broody former Navy Seal who was saved by Poppy when he was younger. And when it comes to Poppy, he can’t help but be possessive and protective of her. Poppy is your typical girl next door and has never forgotten the impact Jack left on her. Despite the pull between them, Jack and Poppy never acted on it. When danger comes knocking on Poppy’s door, she is once again reunited with Jack. Their chemistry is stronger than ever. Can Poppy trust Jack with more than just her protection? There’s only one way to find out…
I thought the plot of this story was interesting and it left me wanting to know more. When it came to Poppy and Jack, the author didn’t hold back, especially with the sexy good times. I thought the story had some interesting twists, however, there were a few parts of the story that felt off to me and didn’t really make sense.
Overall, I kind of had a love/hate relationship with this book. I think this book is going to be a hit for some and a miss for others. For me, it was an okay read. That being said, I do think this series has a lot of potential and I would be interested in seeing where it will go next.
*I was provided an ARC copy of this book via NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review*
The spice was good, the story was...messy. If you're just looking for a fun, sexy time with friends to lovers, military man, alphahole, and/or possessiveness tropes, this book is for you. However, if you're looking for a romance with solid plots that understand how the military functions or even structures suspense well, this probably isn't the book for you. It was a fun listen, but not a good book, if that makes sense. The plot is all over the place (where it even seems to exist) and the author either doesn't bother to explain things or over explains to the point of redundancy.
As for the narration, I think this book would have benefitted either from clearly demarcated dual POV in the narration, or multiple narrators. This poor narrator is trying to do too many voices and accents and it just didn't always work. She tried, and I don't blame her, because the material definitely didn't help. Making the speaker clearer and not forcing her to switch between sentences but rather between chapters would definitely have helped.
Thank you to NG and MacMillan Audio for an ALC in exchange for an honest review.
Fairly poorly written, rather confusing because, like any first book in a series that promises to be fairly endless (if I go by the number of single characters we are introduced to in this first book) it wants to explain too much, introduce future protagonists, set up an arc that will last quite a while, and lots of little ones that will have a book each. The variation on the "alpha male - virgin woman" theme is typical of this author, as are the particularly hot scenes. In short, everything has been seen before, but never as much as in this moment of world insecurity, I gladly rely on Lora Leigh, to forget, at least for a while, the filth that surrounds us.
OK, hear me out. I didn’t expect much from this book because I picked it up at BAM! on a whim before heading to the shore to lounge on the beach all day.
Surprisingly, I didn't hate the characters and the plot was...fine. But then things got so random that by the end, I was left scratching my head, wondering what on earth just happened. Everything about this book was bizarre. I kept waiting for it to get better, but it never did. So, I'm settling on two stars because, hey, I did finish it and it was a fairly easy read.
The couple was cute—I'll give it that. They weren’t extraordinary in any way, but they had their moments. Like when Poppy, the main character, totally pops off and Jack swoops in to cover for her basically chapter 2. I wish the book had stuck with that dynamic and built off the initial plot. If the story had kept that energy, with both characters on the line, I might have enjoyed it more. But no, it took a weird turn into special ops meets AI territory, and I'm still not sure what the author was thinking.
Anyway, I'm glad it's over and I'm moving on to my next read. Onward!
I Picked Up This Book Because: I’ve liked the author’s past works. .
Media Type: Audiobook Source: Netgalley Dates Read: 3/16/24 - 3/19/24 Stars: DNF- No Rating Narrator(s): Brianna Bronte
The Characters:
Poppy Jack Poppy’s brothers, Jack’s other team members
The Story:
At this point I am forcing myself to pick this up. Romantic Suspense with a second chance and a dash of kink is usually right up my alley but I cannot connect with these characters and their chemistry seems forced. I also don’t care for the narrator's male voice. I’ve fought the good fight and I'm giving up.
2 stars because at least I finished it. Should easily be 1 Tw: murder + rape within first 2 chapters, indirectly but there.
A group of dishonorably discharged soldiers who were actually good guys just upholding justice in their own way (illegal or just frowned up, so getting busted for it). And with covers that make them even worse than they are. So like, you root for them but also not? Confusing.
WTF is this book? Weird threats of AI. Mercenary teams trying to kill each other. Some weird threat that involves poppy. Her asshole brother and suspicious bosses who you never see. Nothing makes any sense.
Yes it’s spicy. And they’re cute together sure. But not really sure if it’s romance either?
Absolute weirdest ending. Sci-fi heavy.
Imagine this is start of a series. No need to read the rest.
Overall I think this book will potentially land well received in darker romance reader groups as the spice was well-written and included many on-page scenes. However, for me, I just wanted more explicit consent between the two main characters, especially given her background of being a SA survivor (rescued by her now love-interest). There was also next to no character interactions to allow for a connection/relationship to develop so the characters felt one dimensional to me and I had a hard time being invested in the spice.
I appreciate the opportunity to try this one, but unfortunately it was not for me and I will not be featuring on my socials.
“She was his light in the dark. Always guiding him. Always ensuring he didn’t lose his way.”
I’ve always loved Lora Leigh’s books! To have been able to have done a ARC read of a audiobook given to me by @netgalley is just such an awesome experience!
I did however only give it a Four Star rating. It didn’t snag my attention and make me not want to put it down like past books. But I still loved the book. Made me feel a little iffy however when the AI was introduced into the storyline.
Besides those two things, I loved and enjoyed the audio!! Definitely buying the physical copy when it comes out later this month!!!
I wasn’t sure what to make of this story. Did I enjoy it kinda would I recommend it to someone probably not. Why? Because I honestly don’t know what I read. The plot was kinda hard to understand throughout and it just seemed a bit all over the place. Like ex Navy Seal undercover plotline and her brothers being in the mix of things. I don’t know it came off weird to me. I’m also not a huge age gap trope person but luckily you don’t really notice in here. The book is spicy and the scenes are written well. Unfortunately this story wasn’t for me.
I gave this a 3.5 stars! The spice level was definitely there and was exactly what I expected. But there was some back door play which is really hard for me to read — without that, I probably would have rated it a full 4 stars! I think the author did a great job adding a foundational storyline to this, one that’s very real and raw right now. I think this is a very smart read, and it’s one I fully enjoyed. The chemistry between characters was there. The DRAMA. The betrayal. Though I did expect some of the twists, the epilogue had me FLOORED and shocked. And I cannot wait for a second book!
