Started reading this because my foster son was reading it in grade seven English class. I hadn't heard of it before, and thought I would be able to help him more if I read it myself. Quick read, well written and interesting. Although, I did not enjoy the ending as much because you never find out if her dad comes home or if he is even alive. It would have been nice to know.

Read this to my daughters on our family trip to Newfoundland and it was just perfect. Good historical context and sense of place with some fantasy and suspense. It helped us pass the time with joy and interest while their dad was driving us around the province and got us ready for the last leg of our trip, St John’s. I look forward to reading more of Ms McNaughton’d books with my daughters.
