Be More Octopus was a witty, funny, charming read, earning the 4 stars. The seaside setting and slow burn small town romance created a cozy backdrop, and I loved the supporting characters - Nancy, Lucy and Mark - brought something to the table and were not just there as tokens in the background. They added to the humour and it was heart warming to see all the encouragement for Em to make her art into her career. There were lots of snarky and snappy one liners that just represented the satire of British humour which had me giggling away in a room with people who had no idea what I was laughing at. Whilst Jack could be stubborn, Em frustrated me on her non-hen do and i’m not usually the biggest fan of the miscommunication trope - but when it actually came down to it, they actually resolved their issues like real-world adults with responsbilities and truly wanted to be together.
I would advise signing up to the newletter and grabbing the free e-book ‘Making Plans’. It takes up from the morning after the last page and gives a lovely additional few chapters to wrap up Em and Jack’s story.
The title of this definitely intrigued me and I loved the story behind it. The book had a cosy lighthearted feel, with added humour and drama, a great summer read. Poor Em discovers her fiancée has been cheating and decides she's had enough, she cancels the wedding, moves out, then decides to take up an opportunity in the small coastal town of Dashford, a fresh start and escape that comes with a new job, flat, and time for her to paint. She was enjoying her new single life until an awkward meetcute with a handsome guest leaves her flustered and confused. After some more damsel in distress moments with Jack coming to the rescue, she starts to embrace her feelings, but it turns out Jack is married, even if his relationship is just as complicated. This story has you on the edge throughout not knowing if they will get together or not, with family and friends playing matchmaker, a lot of miscommunication, and ex's causing tension. I loved Em's friendship with Lucy, they are a great support to each other, and their banter with each other was great. It's an entertaining journey that keeps you hooked right till the last page, with a host of fun characters, second chances, learning to trust again, and being more octopus.

I'm excited to take part in the SummerExtravaganza @Lovebookstours Book Tour of the laugh outloud romantic comedy Be More Octopus by @suzannelissaman
Be More Octopus by Suzanne Lissaman immediately drew me in with its fun and intriguing title. Early on in the book the title is explained and I absolutely love the explanation. This is such a cute friends to lovers closed door romantic comedy. I found myself smiling and laughing throughout and enjoyed the humor. Theres nothing better than a meetcute that involves hitting a handsome professor with a hoover vacuum. 🤣
This was just the perfect lighthearted and comical summer read. I loved following along as Em and Jack's relationship grew from friends to lovers with lots of hiccups and twists and turns throughout including an entitled ex. I cant wait to find out what the next book in the series has in store.

This was an interesting book! The title alone is a grabber. The title is quickly explained in the book, and I loved the explanation! (I’m not going to spoil it by telling you, you have to read the book!).
Em’s friendship with Lucy is the absolute best. Lucy is there for her through anything, but she also provides some comic relief. We should all have a friend like Lucy.
Now Em. I really liked her at first, but then she bothered me. She made some choices that I didn’t agree with (total personal opinion), and she assumed things without seeking clarification. The miscommunication trope is used a few times in this one. Maybe once would have been enough.
Em and Jack’s relationship was nice. It was easy going. But he was equally annoying at times because he didn’t seem to want to say what he was thinking or feeling. I did enjoy the ending though. I wish we had more of them together in a relationship. That’s to say, this book is the true definition of a slow burn. So if you like the slow burns, you will LOVE this book.
The writing was light and entertaining. I was engrossed from the first page and looked forward to picking it back up for each reading session. It was what I would describe as a proper romantic comedy. So many books claim to be rom com, but for me the com is often missing. No such thing with this book! There were a lot of mishaps and miscommunications which kept my interest. I felt so sorry for the main character, yet she kept on going.
The story was split into 3 parts, which were dated and then split into chapters. It gave you a good idea of timescale. The chapters in each part were short, which kept the story moving. I liked the fact that time moved on fairly quickly and that we didn't linger too long on anything. This all meant that my interest never wavered.
The chapters flowed together well, and we went from one mishap to the other, which kept me on my toes. There were some heavier moments which added to the story and gave it more grounding.
The characters were excellent. I enjoyed being on Em's journey. Despite the obstacles, she kept focused on what she wanted. I loved the friendships that Em had and enjoyed reading the texts between her and her best friend. It gave the story a contemporary feel to it. I also loved the relationship between Em and her boss Nancy. It was nice to see the support that they gave one another.
Lastly the settings. I enjoyed being in North Devon by the Coast. Whilst it was a character focused story, the little bits of scenery that were described were good.
This such a cute romance read where the relationship has its ups and downs before finally reaching the happy ending.
It’s not just a romance though as this book also has comedy elements, which helped keep the book light even though it dealt with topics such as adultery and divorce.
Jack is such an endearing character, a gentleman through and through!
I was drawn in by the title of this book and you find out towards the beginning where it comes from, I’m definitely stealing that one!
I really enjoyed this one! It's a perfect, easy summer read! I really like Em and Jack and loved Lucy and Nancy ( I'm so excited they've got their own books, which I'm excited to check out!) Overall, I enjoyed the storyline, though, for someone who has a love-hate relationship with the miscommunication trope, there were a few to many for my liking, though it didn't stop me from enjoying it! Definitely one to pick up if you want a nice, easy summer read 😊
What a quirky title! It’s quickly explained in the book (I won’t spoil) but I enjoy the meaning behind it. This one relied on my least favorite trope a few times, miscommunication, but I did enjoy the story overall and glad that our FMC got a second chance at love after a horrible engagement. Jack was quick to assuming things, which given his prior relationship, makes sense but I think it was symbolic that he needed more time to himself rather than jumping into another relationship, so in that case I do like that this one was a slow burn sprinkled with some bouts of jealousy. I do wish we got more time with them as a couple though towards the end. The end felt rushed but mainly because I wanted more!
Thank you Love Book Tours for having me on the tour!
Thank you to Love Book Tours and the author for a gifted ebook of Be more octopus is a book that immediately caught my attention, the cover is gorgeous, the synopsis promised a twisty romance, with the tagline on the cover stating a “laugh out loud rom com". The book follows and is from the perspective of Em, who has just discovered her fiancé has been involved in a long running affair in the lead up to their wedding, thus Em decides enough is enough, calls the whole thing off and embarks on a journey of rediscovery.
Now whilst this was a very easy read, with low drama, and very short chapters, a lovely summer/beach vibe setting, I did find myself becoming frustrated, there was so much presumption and miscommunication in this book and some of the characters behaviours really were questionable, I did love just how many twists there were, however these all felt like they were down to the MCs miscommunication, and I feel like some of the action in this book was kind of unnecessary, like I have no idea for the reasoning behind the Mark and Ben/Karl interactions other than to add more “drama” and miscommunication between Jack and Em, I feel like there could have been more development with Isabella being the main obstruction to their relationship, and to just breeze over the stalking type incident was little unnerving.
Majority of the characters are really well written, and I completely shipped Jack and Em, but I did not like the way that both characters would result to “revenge sex” after their lack of communication and assumptions about one another, it really made their relationship seem quite false. However, Nancy and Lucy were great buffers throughout this book, and I loved the way they helped Em and was providing various comic relief throughout the book. I like what the author was portraying with the character of Isabella, everyone is quick to judge women as being the victims of domestic abuse, but not very often are they seen as the aggressors, and I really like that the author highlighted this, however I would have liked Isabella to have more consequences for her behaviour to be honest.
There are a lot of fade-to-black moments in the book, and the time jumps can be a bit tricky to keep up with, but the chapters are very short making this an easy and quick read. The world setting was lovely, and I could easily envision the grange and wish it was a real place to escape to! The ending was blissful, and I was glad of the journey the book took us on to get there, as it showed that relationships require work, and I am glad the Em and Jack were able to do this.

When Em finds out that her fiancée Connor has been cheating on her she knows it’s time for a change. That comes in the form of a role as a holiday let concierge at Dashford Grange in North Devon. But then she meets visiting professor Jack and her life is about to become complicated again.
I would describe this book as a laugh out loud rom com because I did find myself laughing from the outset. This was such a fun and quick read. I liked that the chapters were short because I just wanted to read more. As someone who is born and raised in Birmingham I loved how the book featured my home town from the start and included St Paul’s Square.
I really liked Em as a character. She is very strong and resilient but I did feel bad for her when she found out that her fiancée was cheating on her because she found out in the worst way possible. But she plucked up the courage and confronted him. My favourite thing about Em was that she had a monologue of her inner voice running in her head as to what she was thinking about a situation or person which did make me chuckle. I had so many memorable scenes but the ones that will stay in my mind was the scene where Em is being interviewed and her dad’s new girlfriend casually walks in naked moving a large picture of a nude woman.
The first meeting between Em and Jack was certainly unforgettable and funny especially because she hits him with a hoover. Neither Em or Jack are looking for a relationship but they just connect. Em is trying to make a new start and Jack is concentrating on writing his book. Jack is what I would describe as the perfect gentleman because when Em hurts her ankle he helps her with her tasks. Em and Jack have a really sweet relationship which starts as friendship and then starts to turn into something more especially when they start spending time together and going on mini dates. But then things become complicated when Jack’s ex makes an appearance and Em becomes embroiled in further drama. Matters become further complicated when they start to mistrust each other but I was please to see that the story ended with a happily ever after.
Ok so I’ve got mixed feelings . When I read the blurb of this book I was immediately interested . The name itself was so clever and I was curious about the characters . Overall , I enjoyed the story . Jack was a sweetheart with a troubled past( and present) but he was so wholesome and caring ! I liked him from the get go . Any person who can laugh off getting whacked by a vacuum is my kind of person .
Now the mixed feelings . I was really enjoying Em and Jack’s relationship . It seemed so easy for them to get along . But then .. the part where she sleeps with Karl because she overheard what sounded like Jack going back to his wife bugged me . For some reason I just could not get past someone having these strong feelings for someone and then goin and sleeping with someone else without talking first! Maybe it’s my inexperience or unrealistic expectations talking but I couldn’t understand the thinking . Then seeing them get back to being friends was lovely but then there were so many misunderstandings in between their HEA! I’m usually not irritated by shenanigans but for some reason I just couldn’t get on board . Although I really liked the characters , they just seemed very immature at times (I.e the tit for tat game that was being played). My favorite character was Nancy . She’s adorable and feisty . I wish I was more like her.🖤
I am also looking forward to the next book . Lucy has intrigued me ..

The Blurb : When Em discovers that her fiancé’s having an affair, she leaves her stressful call centre job, packs up her paints and easel and moves to the coast to build a better life on her own. But her new life becomes more complicated when a charming professor, Jack Carver, arrives for a holiday. Who’s he avoiding? And what do Jack and Em have in common? Set in Birmingham, London and the fictional town of Dashford in North Devon, 'Be More Octopus' is an entertaining, friends-to-lovers romantic comedy following the twists and turns of Em and Jack’s love lives with lots of 'will they, won't they?' moments.
My Thoughts : We meet Em, having found out her fiance Connor had been having an affair weeks before the wedding, she decides to up sticks and moves to a new job managing holidays guests in the delightful village of Dashford in Devon. Her new boss Nancy seems lovely but also has a feisty wild side to her. But they are well suited and strike up a great friendship. Soon Em meets the handsome Jack Carver and things start to become interesting, especially as Jack is slightly troubled and comes with a complicated past! As we follow their journey and get to know the couple, we learn of what has brought them both to where they are now. But has Em had enough of men in her life or is she ready to open her heart and trust again!?. The characters were all very likeable and well rounded. Also there are twists and turns throughout and each page keeps you guessing about what will happen next. I really enjoyed this book by Suzanne Lissaman and am pleased that I have the sequel Be More Lucy all ready to read next.

My Opinion
I had so many questions about the title that I just had to read the book, very quickly all becomes clear - I laughed at the explanation. I thought that Be More Octopus was a highly entertaining read and I found myself at the end far quicker than I would have liked. Suzanne Lissaman has used short chapters to keep the book moving at a fast pace. This will definitely make for a great holiday read.
Personally I thought that Em and Jack were both great characters and I really enjoyed seeing how the friends-to-lovers played out. Everyone needs a friend like Lucy.
Is hitting a handsome professor with a vacuum cleaner a good way to start a new relationship? Em doesn't think so, and she's happy being single. But there was definitely a spark, and it didn't come from the hoover…
This is a really fun and light summer read! I like how Em quits her stressful job and goes looking for something better. She meets Jack and there are definitely sparks, but they have a very will they or won’t they style relationship at first.
This was a quick read for me - I definitely enjoyed the humor and also there are some good twists! I really liked the side characters too. Did Em and Jack sometimes frustrate me? Yes! But, stick with it!!
“Do you know what a female octopus would do in this situation?’ Em said. ‘She would throw things at him.”
I never knew that a female octopus will hurl rocks at unwanted male suitors to avoid unwanted male attention. I loved how Em’s friend Lucy would tell her to “be more octopus” when someone was being annoying/frustrating/not treating her well.
Maybe sometimes we all need to be reminded to be a little more octopus and know our worth 💙
✨What to Expect: 🇬🇧British Romantic Comedy 🏡Small Town 🎨Friends to Lovers 🔥Slow Burn 🚫Closed Door 🐙Know Your Worth
I loved this title, it is explained during the course of the book.
When Em catches her fiancé cheating, she decides it's time to start afresh, so she finds herself a new job far from home.
The first meeting between Em and Jack is unfortunate as she accidentally hits him with a vacuum cleaner. This sets the tone for the humour to come.
I liked Em as a person and felt sorry for her, although she did frustrate me at times with some of her actions. Her friendship with Lucy was great, especially some of their text exchanges and I loved how her relationship with Nancy grew.
Jack came across as a real gentleman but we find out he has issues with an ex-wife, which makes him complicated. This, I felt, led him to making some wrong decisions.
There was a definite spark between them but they agreed to be friends. Unfortunately, both were too quick to make assumptions, jump to wrong conclusions and miscommunicate which sabotaged their friendship at times and I did feel there was a little too much of this.
Overall, I really enjoyed this friends to lovers romantic comedy, however, I did feel the ending was a bit abrupt and would have liked just a little bit more on Em and Jack.
I really wanted to love Be More Octopus more than I did. The basic storyline pulled me in, the characters were great, and I especially loved the chemistry between Em and Jack in the beginning. Their connection had so much potential, and I was excited to see where it would go.
But what broke this book for me was the constant misunderstandings, followed by quick and almost too-easy forgiveness each time. By the end, the final straw that broke them up felt completely ridiculous and out of character. Jack, who was painted as chivalrous, just running away? It didn’t make sense. There should have been some kind of real confrontation—at least a fight between Jack and Connor—to give the story the payoff it deserved.
Instead, Jack turned into a walking bundle of red flags, and I honestly didn’t want them to end up together anymore. In fact, I would have been happier if Em ended up with Ben… or even Mark! At least it would have felt more satisfying. And let’s not forget—Jack was still married!
So while I loved the characters and the setup, the ending left me let down. Three stars for the charm and the potential, but I wish the conclusion had lived up to the promise of the beginning.

For some reason, summer feels like the time for romance (just like the holidays). And this has been my favorite summer romance so far this year!
I connected with – Em – our FMC’s need to “Be More Octopus.” It’s a whole lifestyle that I’m also trying to embrace! Very empowering!
This is a story of two people growing, learning, and overcoming together. And it’s so sweet. I adored both of our MCs. But I also really enjoyed all the background characters – except the ones I was meant to hate. I’ve waxed poetic more than once that writing equally loveable and hateable characters is my kryptonite. Top author honors if you do this!
If you enjoy romance books, grab this immediately. However, a warning to my spice-loving friends: This isn’t even a three-pepper book. It’s very mild, just as my little ace heart likes it. It’s right in my comfort level, but I know plenty prefer all the steam.
This is a slow-burn, friends-to-lover with miscommunication and love triangles. Some hated tropes, but I loved them all!! Also, this author can wield a comedic Hoover like none I’ve read before!
I can’t wait to read more by this author. There’s already a sequel set for this one starring Em’s best friend, Lucy, so that’s absolutely going on my TBR list!
A hilarious feel-good romantic comedy. When Em discovers Connors infidelity weeks before their marriage she takes best friends Lucy’s advice to ‘be more octopus’ but instead of hurling rocks at his head she moves back in with her dad. When his girlfriend Cynthia stumbles naked into the office during Em’s online interview for a live-in job in Devon she thinks her chances are blown. But new boss Nancy has a secret wild side and Em finds herself living in the beautiful village of Dashford helping manage holiday guests. Enter charming professor Jack Carver, when the two collide fireworks explode. But Jacks life is complicated. A series of hilarious encounters and will they / won’t they get together follow with ex’s arriving on the scene to scupper their chances. Can they win each others trust at their final meeting and get together? ( I don’t want to spoil it readers!) This is a fabulous debut novel, I can’t wait to read book 2!
When Em finds her fiance cheating on her, by seeing messages on his phone, she decides she needs a fresh start.
Finding a live-in job for a holiday letting company soon has Em thinking about what she wants in life, and the opportunity of becoming an artist is soon in full flow; But there may be love on the horizon also.
I love the main characters of Em and Jack. Both had so much healing to do in this book and trust and communication were really big themes.
I loved Nancy and Lucy and their matching-making skills and felt I wanted these types of friendships.
This is written in the third person, told from the point of view of Em, I loved her strong character and how she stood up for herself and knew what she wanted and how to get it.
We also had the contrasting characters of Connor and Isabella and straight away the reader knows to dislike them.
You know I wasn't sure what to think about this book because the title kinda throws you for a loop. It is explained though early on so I won't give it away. That should make you want to go get this book and find out !! So I really want a friendship like Em and Lucy have. I mean she is there for her all the time the ups the downs good bad and ugly and she is also funny like really funny. I feel we all need that friend to make us laugh even when we don't want to !!! I mean this is a typical miscommunication book and a slow burn and a why didn't they just say how they felt. Why didn't they ask for clarification?! Ahhh I wanted to be like what are you doing Em and Jack !!! I honestly wish we had more of them together to see what it was really like!! Or how they did with communications together. I really enjoyed the writing and I can't wait to check out more from this author !!! I do hope we have more and that maybe this is going to become a series ?? Hoping so??
When a book is promoted as a ‘laugh out loud’ romcom, I expected to at least raise a chuckle if not a belly laugh and to be an emotionally satisfying romance.
When Em had sex with Karl, I was totally thrown out of the story and never really got back into it. I like my romances to be about the hero and heroine. I don’t like either of them to have sex with somebody else during the story..
When Michael ran off, after Conor set up a scene to make him feel Em had been unfaithful, and then refused to listen to her or believe her for four months, I gave up in frustration. I hate black moments which are founded on stupid misunderstandings.
Sorry, it wasn’t the emotionally satisfying romance I was hoping for although it’s well written and I thought Nancy was a fabulous character.
Simply not my cup of tea,

I adored this book. It was so witty and made me laugh so much. It was written with a great sense of humour. But was sweet and romantic too.
Em and Jack were the most loveable characters. I especially adored Jack, who was a pure cinnamon roll MMC. But he was quite stubborn and after being hurt in the past, had trust issues.
The slow burn between Em and Jack was perfect and the ‘will they/ won’t they’ vibe throughout the book kept me guessing. I’m a huge fan of friends to lovers in rom coms and this was just brilliantly done. Their friendship was so sweet. And I loved the way Jack made Em feel so safe and looked after.
The side characters in the book were also fab. Nancy and Lucy were brilliant with their meddling ways. And Lucy’s bluntness made me laugh.
This was a fabulous friends to lovers romance and one I enjoyed hugely.
I absolutely adored this wee book. It was brilliant to read a lovely wee rom com to warm up the heart and the evening with a good giggle. I loved that the book took us on a journey for the main character to aim to reclaim herself and her life. It was wonderful to read along with all the fun times as she built herself up and as some things came tumbling a bit. It was great getting to know the main characters and the details of who they were. Then as their lives come crashing together, we got to wonder whether they were destined to find their way together. I loved the way the author let their story unfold and the way life kept happening round them, in a very real way. That definitely made the book more believable and a lot more fun to read. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more from this author.
This is Book One in 'The Dashford Comedies.' After finding out that her fiance, Connor has been cheating on her, Em knows it's time to pack up her belongings and start a fresh. Heading to Dashford Grange, North Devon, Em hopes this is what she needs, to get over her ex. Getting a job letting holiday homes is her first step at something new and starting her new life. Or is it? Jack Carver is a professor who is visiting Dashford and looking for somewhere to stay. The first meet between Em and Jack doesn't start very well, as Em hits him with the hoover, Neither Em or Jack are looking for a relationship but is it going to stay that way? I loved this book, I felt like I was watching a good rom com. It's a easy, funny quick read, with chapters that are short. It one of them books that you pop in your bag and read every time you have a bit of time spare, I read it in one sitting.
I was immediately drawn to this by the title. I loved what it expressed once it was explained and felt completely that we could all do with being more octopus! Connor - toerag, we hate you! Lucy - she really wants to be a good mate, but some of her advice and wellmeaning words were awful. She needs to work on her positivity! Nancy - oh, I loved her, the mum that Em definitely needed. Jack - gosh, I could have shaken him several times over, but he was described so dreamily. Emily - I loved her finding her confidence. The setting was cute, and the cottages and guesthouse idea were idyllic and perfect for Em's recuperation. There were some really funny moments - such as that job interview. The chapters were short and snappy, which had me racing through them. I really enjoyed this book and would love to read the sequel focusing on Lucy.
I absolutely adore octopi so how could I resist grabbing this book instantly!!
This is the start of a brand new series - The Dashford Comedies - and was just the perfect summer quick read romcom.
We follow Em as she escapes her stressful life - and cheating fiancé - to the beautiful North Devon coast to start again. Obviously, there's a new beau in town too and we all know where this story is heading - but honestly, who cares! - we still love it!
I hate cheating and so of course, I was all for Em getting her happy ever after right from the start and when Jack enters the scene, I was rooting for their friendship to develop into something more. There's lots of to-ing and fro-ing and the usual mis-communication (that really frustrated me) ....but this had me racing rheough the pages just to get to the good part!
I loved the writing which was light and fun but also beautifully descriptive. I used to holiday in Devon as a child and have so many fond memories of those summer days - this made me so nostalgic and I really wanted to head off for a visit again!
I really liked Em's friendship with Lucy which introduced her character well - and I'm pretty sure that she's the star of the next book, which I'm looking forward to reading soon.....
An amusing, sweet romance between two people who have been wounded by love in the past, Be More Octopus will leave you smiling at the end.
When Emily catches her fiancée cheating, she calls off the wedding, ditches her job at the call centre, and answers a wanted ad for a post in Devon. Once there, she hopes to reignite her love of painting while she figures out what to do with her life. Enter Jack Carver, a professor with a penchant for pirate ships. Together they navigate the choppy waters from friendship to lovers, with plenty of miscommunication along the way.
I enjoyed this light romcom and was cheering on the couple from the beginning, although sometimes I wanted to slap them both. Recommended for people who enjoy Jenny Colgan.
This was a lovely summer read! Em is looking for a fresh start after a betrayal by her fiancé and finds it working at a holiday let in North Devon. There she has the time to rediscover herself and begin to paint again. She also meets Jack, who is dealing with his own stuff, and they start to get close. But they haven’t learned how to communicate or to trust and what they started falls apart. Will they get another chance to start over? I really enjoyed the characters and they started to feel like friends. I was invested and wanted the best for Em and Jack. I can’t wait to read more by this author. If you are a fan of romcoms I recommend adding this to your summer reading.
Thanks to the author and Love Book Tours for providing a copy for my honest review.
This was a laugh out loud, perfect for summer, rom com. Who knew that female octopi threw shells and things at males to make them go away. I'm definitely going to Be More Octopus. Another "fun" fact is that some octopus species, the male detaches his penis which then swims to the female to impregnate her! He then dies.
Anyway... on to the review.
I really like Em. She's a strong female lead who, rather than sitting around moping, decides to move to the other side of the country and start a new life. I loved the relationship between her and Jack. A real slow burn
I also really loved Nancy, I think I'd like to be like her when I'm older.
If you're looking for a fun read for the summer then I'd definitely recommend Be More Octopus.
Be More Octopus by Suzanne Lissaman is book one in the Dashford Comedies series. If you like, slow burn, romcoms, miscommunication , friends to lovers books then you will love this book.
I enjoyed this book so much. Em was such a bad ass instead of breaking down after finding out her boyfriend was cheating she came up with a plan, picked herself up, and started over. Jack’s ex-wife made me so mad and I felt bad for him that she only wanted him when it was convenient for her. The slow burn between Em and Jack perfect for the story. I genuinely loved the friendship that they built and how they supported each other. I loved the side characters as well they had me giggling. I have now become obsessed with the phrase “be more octopus.” Thank you to Love Book Tours and Suzanne Lissaman for letting me read a copy of this book for my honest thoughts and opinions.
