Eppure nella Vienna della metà del 1800 era un’idea sovversiva. A tirarla fuori era stato un uomo qualunque, un medico anonimo: il suo nome era Ignàc Semmelweis.
Mentre il numero dei decessi per febbre puerperale cresceva sempre più, Semmelweis aveva scoperto dove si nascondeva la minaccia, quale era la causa. A diffondere la malattia erano i medici stessi. Pur avendo un immediato effetto positivo i suoi suggerimenti spaventarono la gerarchia medica, che confinò Semmelweis nell’ombra.
