Agnes Nieuwenhuizen

Agnes Nieuwenhuizen was born in Iran of Hungarian parents. She emigrated to Australia in 1949 For over twenty years she was a secondary school teacher. Literature and talking about books have always been an important part of Agnes's family life and work.

Since 1987 Agnes has worked full time in the area of young adult literature. She created, and holds, the position of Victorian Youth Literature Officer and provides a range of activities for young people and adults that promote authors, reading and writing in innovative and entertaining ways. Her writing includes reviews, interviews and a number of books. A review of More Good Books for Teenagers (Reed Books, 1995) in the Australian Book Review described Agnes as "Australia's foremost advocate of youth literature". Agnes was awarded the 1994 Dromkeen Medal for "services to Australian children's and young adult literature".
