When my class entered a religious order, we were told: “The formation you will receive will be extensive, intensive, and comprehensive.” At that early point we didn’t realize how true that would be! So I have a background in church history, theology, scripture, and spirituality.
I’ve used that background over the last nineteen years as an RCIA catechist. The book here reviewed pulls together the disciplines mentioned above to enhance and supplement the fledgling Catholic’s introductory journey. The approach is highly experiential and is useful over a wide range of demographic, educational, and cultural strata. The activities “are intended to help participants reflect on their faith experience, as well as to give the leaders and sponsors an indication of how the candidates think and feel about various subjects. …Some activities take but a few moments, others longer. Most require materials prepared ahead of time; some require no supplies at all.” (p. 1) (Materials, where needed, are really inexpensive and easily obtainable if they’re not sitting around already.)
Any RCIA program, whatever its focus or orientation, can benefit from this book’s creative and insightful possibilities!
