A new quest begins and new dangers await. The start of an all-new BIONICLE saga!
Six new heroes, the Toa Inika, have arrived on the besieged island of Voya Nui in search of the missing Toa Nuva. What they find instead are the vicious Piraka and a desperate Matoran resistance fighting for freedom. But when four of the Piraka steal the power of the mighty Brutaka, Toa Jaller and his team must fight for their very lives against evil unbound.

A lot going on in this entry as the newly-zapped Toa Inika get used to their new powers which match the gimmicks (it’s fun seeing how Greg incorporates the toy features) as the Piraka gang fractures. We get our prelude to Axonn and Bruktaka’s fight to the finish and a teaser of Vezon and the monstrous Fenrakk. A very action-oriented entry, we’re left with a cliff-hanger as both teams descend into the depths of the island.
More meaningless action from Greg. At the very least, he has improved by this point in getting his point across more succinctly, and only depicting scenes of action with real stakes. This is necessary reading for the saga, in my opinion. The two previous can be skipped, even if they are better written.
“I don’t know who or where they are, but there are six new Toa on this island. And they are coming for you.” —
Alrighty friendos let’s talk about some more BIONICLE. “Power Play” is when the Toa Inika get on the scene, the Plot really picks up, and that’s great.
It *is* a bit frustrating that the Inika, who are completely new Toa, manage to fight the Piraka on more even terms than the Toa Nuva. I get that they were more prepared for it, and that they have powers which specifically allow them to do things other Toa can, and shrug off the mind-control stuff that the Piraka try on them. It’s still a little grating that the Toa Nuva, the original heroes, and canonically the most powerful Toa, get their bionic butts handed to them TWICE, and these noobs show up and beat the Piraka quite handily. I think that there’s a chance for some great, complex character work, with them getting used to their new powers and practicing with it, it’s just run through quickly to get the Plot going.
Aside from that, though, the story’s pretty great for a BIONICLE story. There’s tons of action throughout, with creative usage of elemental and mask powers. While some of the quips are pretty cheesy (“I’m not falling for that. Why don’t you fall instead?”), you can kind of justify it as these guys have just become Toa and are trying way too hard to sound cool. And you get a lot more exposition and revelations about things going on in Voya Nui.
Who wrote this?!?!?! I already know but they are good with these characters. How Thok and Hakann had all Brutaka's power to the other stuff that I forget because it was a long time ago, it was hard to put down.
