Here is an intriguing collection of true stories about ordinary people who have the extraordinary experience of sharing their lives with ghosts! In Ghosts! Personal Accounts of Modern Mississippi Hauntings, author Sylvia Hubbard takes a realistic approach to a supernatural subject, and her very lack of exaggeration or tabloid sensationalism makes these authentic accounts all the more chilling. From antebellum mansions to modern suburbs, here are twenty-five true stories of active Mississippi ghosts, chronicled by the people who know them best—those who actually live and work amidst these disembodied spirits on a daily basis. Evocative photographs by Robert Hubbard, taken at the site of the hauntings, illustrate the book. These starkly beautiful black and white pictures, with no artificial special effects to mar their power, capture the aura of the ghostly settings. Within these pages, in their own words, are real stories...from real people...about real Ghosts!
This is a collection of true stories from people who live with ghosts. The cover blurb states "Author Sylvia Hubbard takes a realistic approach to a supernatural subject, and her very lack of exaggeration or tabloid sensationalism makes these authentic accounts all the more chilling"..hmm, well sorry not in my opinion. For me they came over rather monotonous & repetitive though I applaud the fact that these stories are as recounted & have been not embellished - if that's how things happened fair enough but it didn't make for gripping reading.
The "..starkly beautiful black & white pictures, with no artificial special effects to mar their power, capture the aura of the ghostly setting" failed to give me goosebumps as well. Yes there's some beautiful buildings but the effect to me was one of a photocopied picture, with the one on page 19 reminding me of a computer graphic.
I found the history of places to be interesting enough but only to read in short bursts & as someone who has always been intrigued by the idea of ghosts there's nothing that made me think "yup, that's a ghost alright" ;o)
This author does an excellent job of giving the reader the history of the location and the haunt itself without going into such detail that she looses the reader's interest. Most of each story deals with recent activity and the eyewitness accounts of the activity. She makes a particularly insightful observation in noting that some phenomena such as phantom footsteps and lights that turn off and on by themselves are common to most haunts whereas the popular idea of rattling chains and weary moans are almost never present. Over many years of reading ghost books I've noticed the same thing.
Each story presented touches on the historical. I liked the little history behind each building. I hadn't realized how many historical buildings Mississippi had. A very good and easy read. Nothing scary, just a touch of real life paranormal accounts. Makes me want to take a trip and go visit all of these sites myself and see the beauty of these plantations and mansions.
