Now this was absolutely a kick-ass Vampire novel!!I devoured in one sitting!
Love, Love, Love, Loved It!!!
Solange Drake is just about to turn 16 and endure the Bloodchange that will make her a Vampire, that's if she can survive it. But that's only one of her problems. She's also a rare female Vampire, born-not-turned, so it makes her a kind of Princess, or so the prophecy says...
There is a bounty on Solange and between the Vampire Hunters who want her for the money and A wish-she-was-Queen who views her as a threat, not to mention the long list of men who want to court her. Solange Drake is always under the very watchful eyes of her 7, gorgeous immortal brothers, along with her parents, aunts, uncles and body guards, Oh and of course her very human, very over protective, best friend, Lucy. Feeling more then overwhelmed, Solange isn't a happy camper.
With both Solange and Lucy's point of views, Alyxandra Harvey deliveries two head strong, fierce and courageous gals that are easy to love and be extremely proud of!
They reminded me a lot of Lissa and Rose form Vampire Academy, but the only difference is, Solange and Lucy can both kick some serious ass!
I loved the fact that Solange has 7 overbearing Vampire brothers who want nothing more then to protect there little sis and keep her save. It was really quite cute!
I adore Nickolas! He's stubborn, protective, charmingly sexy and oh-so-very delicious! I found myself re-reading a lot of his and Lucy's...moments, which left a goofy smile on my face!
Heart at Stake has it all! A precious romance to swoon over, a wonderful cast of characters that are instantly loved. An adventurous, spunky-as-hell plot, that is action packed and fast paced! Never a dull moment and extremely addictive! The writing was brilliant with humorous dialog. It was witty, funny, sexy and feisty! I had so much fun reading this unique world!!!
The Drake Chronicles is a welcoming addiction to this much love paranormal universe! I can't wait for Blood Feud to come out! I already know it's going to be one of my favorite will-be-series!

There's this thing called the White Pine award. Every year, ten young adult books written by Canadian authors are chosen, and then we can vote through our highschools and the winning author gets the award. Normally the books are pretty good. The only reason that I read Hearts at Stake is because of White Pine; you're supposed to read all of the books in order to vote.
First of all, shall we discuss the title. Hearts at Stake... really? Did they think that it was a clever play on words, because of the whole vampire-stake thing? Was it meant to be a humourous pun? It just annoyed me. Especially since I was determined that I wouldn't read any more young adult paranormal romances, especially not young adult vampire romances. And that was exactly what this book was. It was an extraordinarly weak plotline, including, I kid you not, a prophecy. Are authors really still doing the whole prohpacy thing? The gist and the nub of it all was that I knew exactly what was going to happen from about the third chapter. Everytime that a new 'twist' was introduced, I just kind of sat there like, huh, she really couldn't think of something even remotely original to put in there? Because a romance between the best friend and the brother who acts like a jerk is not original. A person that flips sides is not original. Someone being betrayed by someone :O gasp :O that they thought they could trust is not original, especially not in the context that it happened in this book. And if you're going to introduce someone with seven brothers, you might want to give them personalities other than protective brother number 1. protective brother who wears stylish clothes. protective brother that likes computers. protective brother number 4. etc.
Can you tell that I'm getting frustrated? You should be able to. I just really don't understand how some things are getting published. It's the same story being recycled over and over again. Granted, this story tried really hard to go in a different path; there was an attempt to set up an aristocratic society and political intrigue, but there was no depth, no subtlety and no multi-dimensional characters. The 'romance' was too sudden. There was no build up or slow development of feelings. It was like, hey, wanna make out because we find each other attractive? ;) Sure!
In a nut shell, I will not be voting for this book for White Pine. If this book ranks in the top three, I will have lost my faith in teen readers everywhere. And if I ever succumb to curiosity and read the next book of the series, I want somebody to shoot me, because I can just tell that it won't be getting any better than this.
***Update*** I was talking with my friend about the decline in YA novels, and I used this book as an example. When I told him what the title was, he said "Please tell me that it is a romance about chefs." as in, Hearts at Steak. We then went on to describe it. They know all about cooking the perfect steak, but have yet to find the recipe for love. There was more, and we found it hysterically funny, but I forget it. Maybe it was one of those, heat of the moments funny type things. The point is, we all agreed that that would have been a much better and more original story. Perhaps we shall write it one day. Be on the lookout.

Another half-star rating...3.5 stars
I was looking for a nice and fluffy YA vampire story with likeable characters, some good laughs, a swoon-worthy male character, an interesting plot but nothing too complicated, basically just a quick read to take my mind off things and that’s exactly what I got. Is the story deep and meaningful? No, definitely not. Is it original? Nope. Is it fun? Hell yes!
Really, there’s nothing extraordinary about this book and the plot is pretty predictable but still, I enjoyed it a lot.
The story’s told from two POVs, Lucy’s and Solange’s and just like everybody else I enjoyed Lucy’s story more. You just got to love Lucy! She’s funny, strong and fiercely protective of her best friend. I liked Solange, too, but Lucy was clearly my favorite.
I also liked the whole Drake clan and I loved how they treated Lucy like part of their family.
The romance part was also nicely done. Well, you know me. I’m a sucker for guys like Nicholas. (Yeah, yeah, before any of you says something I want to point out that I am wearing my cougar t-shirt here, so shut it *winks*)
There’s not much more to say, I liked this, I just ordered the other two books in the series and even if the story wasn’t very original it did have a high fun factor.
Oh, and one more thing. Can someone explain to me how to cross one's eyes smugly? ‘Cause I tried it and believe me, it looked dumb and definitely not smug.

I have no idea why I suddenly found the need to re-read a YA book I read years ago. As you all know, me and YA doesn't really work anymore. It has to be a extremly mature YA for me to like it, yet this re-read wasn't a bust. At all. I totally liked visiting the bestfriends Lucky ‘Lucy’ Hamilton (16) and Solange ‘Sol’ Rosamund Drage (15, turns 16), story again. It was fun, nice, light and filled with family love. I still love the strong friendship between the two and I kinda dig that Lucy is more kickass than delicate, smart and smart Solange. They balance each other out. It's great friendship.
Vampires are rarely born, except in certain ancient families . . . Exhibit A, me and my seven obnoxious older brothers.
But I’m the only girl.
In about nine hundred years.
The love interested for the girls; Solange's brother, Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Drake (17?) and the Helios-Ra agent/a vampire slayer, Kieran Black (18) are cool. Though Nicholas and Lucy holds my heart. I remember not being all that interested in Kieran and Solange's story, only Nicholas and Lucy, and I found myself feeling just the same now. There's just something adorable about the two of them (N&L). Overall, I was surprised that I still liked it. Sure it's a bit too... YA for me; I would've L O V E D reading a adult or a new adult version of this series. Seriously that would've been awesome. The rating is a little lower though, but that was to be expected. Still N&L was worth it.
“I only just found your note. I didn’t even get a chance to tell Nicholas. He just stumbled out of his room, all freaked out.”
We both turned to look at him. I thought he might be blushing— if vampires could blush, that was.
“The house smelled wrong,” he muttered. He glared at us. “Shut up.” Then he went up the stairs. I raised my eyebrows.
“He’s getting weirder.”
Solange snorted, pulled out a handful of nose plugs, air freshener sprays, and a bowie knife from my plastic bags.

First read review:
Easy read, but what an enjoyable journey! The main characters, the bestfriends Lucy Hamilton and Solange Drage have a friendship that everyone would be jealous of. I love how they stick together and fight for each other through it all. And now that Solange has reached an certain age, their friendship will be really tested. When Solange gets kidnapped, Lucy must find a way to get her back, and to do that, she will need help. Teaming up with a person that really dislike her... Nicholas. The development between Lucy and Solange's brother, Nicholas Drake, was what made this book great! He's arrogant, strong, fast and deadly sexy :D I'm probably going to hell for the thoughts i have about that guy...
Lucy ain't the only one with a snarky boy around, with everything that's going on, Solange meets a vampire slayer, Kieran Black. To bad that Solange is a vampire.. But they need each other so they become allies. Perhaps something will blossom there anyway?
This book did really have it all.. Friendship, love, action, humor.. ect.. Alyxandra is an awesome author, and i can't wait to read more from her :)

So good! It was action packed, fast paced, and funny. I read this book within 24 hours it was just too good to put down. I liked Alyxandra Harvey's take on vampires. The history was interesting and unique although at the beginning it was a little bit confusing to remember what was what with The Host, Hounds and Hel-Bar.
This story is told from both Solange's and Lucy's points of view. I found myself enjoying Lucy's story more. She was funny, brave, outspoken, loyal and I loved her moments with Nicholas. The had great chemistry and Nicholas is HOT. I did like Solange too and thought all the characters were great but Lucy and Nicholas were standouts for me. I just couldn't get enough of their story and I hope we see more on them in the series.
Overall a really good start to an exciting new vampire series. I can't wait to read Blood Feud.

This book is like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Princess Diaries got married and had a beautiful, beautiful baby!
Need more to love?
How about: a fresh new vampire mythology, lush writing (I wanted to eat all the food and wear all the clothes), and totally engaging characters. I loved that, instead of being about a hot vampire princess and her stereotypical BFF sidekick (you know the type, slightly less pretty, kinda slutty, a staple of YA lit), it was a dual narrative between two best friends, one a vampire, one a mortal girl, with a realistic relationship and personality to spare.
Oh, AND it's technically a retelling of Snow White, only with seven hot older brothers instead of dwarves.
Oh, and it's worth reading just for descriptions of Aunt Hyacinth, lounging in Victorian splendor in her lacy boudoir, with her pug Mrs. Brown.

To be completely honest, if I were to read this book for the first time today, it wouldn't have gotten more than 4 stars. Maybe even 3.
But I didn't read this book for the first time today. I read it almost a decade ago, when I was eleven, and even then I completely fell in love with Lucy and Nicholas. But you don't know who Lucy and Nicholas are, so let me backtrack a little.
➽ Plot
Frankly, the plot is nothing really special. Lucy Hamilton (real name: Lucky Moon, since her parents are major hippies) is a normal 16-year-old who loves hanging out with her best friend, Solange Drake. Solange is not a normal 15-year-old. She's about to turn into a vampire, like everyone does in the Drake family when they reach their sixteenth birthday, but she's even more special than that: she's one of the only by-birth female vampires in existence. All her six older brothers, and everyone else, are boys. Her special lineage means there's a bunch of political intrigue going on around her impending conversion.
There are also a bunch of humans who want to kill her. One of them is Kieron Black, whose vendetta against vampires gets derailed when he meets Solange. That's one of the romantic threads - but the amazing one, which completely overshadows it, is the romance between Lucy and Solange's older brother Nicholas. When they're left alone together because of the political machinations, the antagonistic snark between them flares into passion. And it is AWESOME.
➽ An Ode to Lucy and Nicholas
The Drake Chronicles is structured a little unusually. Books 2 and 3 focus solely on the romances of Nicholas's older brothers Logan and Quinn, but book 4 - as well as featuring the romance of his brother Connor and Lucy's cousin Christabel - has POV chapters from Lucy as well. Book 5 and 6 doesn't bring in any new romances but returns to our original trio Lucy, Nicholas, and Solange for the perspectives. I am SO GLAD that Harvey makes sure our favourite couple isn't just forgotten about when the book is over.
I'm also so glad that their relationship doesn't go through the usual angst that authors inject to liven things up. There's no OW or OM. Nicholas is completely besotted with Lucy - in fact, I've just made the 'besotted hero' shelf for him. Can't believe I didn't have one before. Lucy is like this adorable badass kitten while Nicholas is the shadow that watches over her. I am so bloody here for it. (Pun totally intended).

There are also a bunch of humans who want to kill her. One of them is Kieron Black, whose vendetta against vampires gets derailed when he meets Solange. That's one of the romantic threads - but the amazing one, which completely overshadows it, is the romance between Lucy and Solange's older brother Nicholas. When they're left alone together because of the political machinations, the antagonistic snark between them flares into passion. And it is AWESOME.

The Drake Chronicles is structured a little unusually. Books 2 and 3 focus solely on the romances of Nicholas's older brothers Logan and Quinn, but book 4 - as well as featuring the romance of his brother Connor and Lucy's cousin Christabel - has POV chapters from Lucy as well. Book 5 and 6 doesn't bring in any new romances but returns to our original trio Lucy, Nicholas, and Solange for the perspectives. I am SO GLAD that Harvey makes sure our favourite couple isn't just forgotten about when the book is over.
I'm also so glad that their relationship doesn't go through the usual angst that authors inject to liven things up. There's no OW or OM. Nicholas is completely besotted with Lucy - in fact, I've just made the 'besotted hero' shelf for him. Can't believe I didn't have one before. Lucy is like this adorable badass kitten while Nicholas is the shadow that watches over her. I am so bloody here for it. (Pun totally intended).

I got this book but didn't expect to like it, the cover isn't so breathtaking but I LOVED it! The vampire twist and the Drake family clan is so funny, surprising and exciting! I remember finishing the book in one sitting, though I was so sleepy, but the book was demanding my attention, I loved that the story was told through different perspectives.
Lucy and Nicholas's relationship was so romantic, I loved how much he longed for her, how he teased her and how protective he was of her. They are my favorite couple so far.

A great book for vampire fans looking for a fun, fast and entertaining read. I'd even recommend this for non vampire fans. This was just a feel good, make you laugh, can't stop turning the pages.... awesome book.
Hearts as Stake is told in alternating perspectives. Solange, the vampire, and Lucy, her best friend. Lucy is not a vampire, but her parents are aware of and close friends with the vampire family, which is something different then the norm. Usually in vampire literature, it's all about secrecy! I really liked the alternating perspectives. I have to admit I was more interesting in reading about Lucy and her love interest, than Solange.
The "mythology" was really interesting. There are vampires that are "born" like Solange, who change when the hit sixteen, they can be "made" too. And there is a variety of different clans, even one that posses blue tinged skin. Plus you can't forget the bad guys, the Helios-Ra that are trained to kill vampires.
Hearts at Stake had such an interesting family dynamic. I loved Solange's mom and her kick ass attitude, and just her overall.... kicking ass all the time!
The story was excellent. The plot was fast paced and engaging and the characters were fun. I can't wait to read the next book in this series!!

Es ist mittlerweile fast zwei Jahre her, dass ich diesen ersten Band zum ersten Mal gelesen habe. Damals habe ich dem Buch vier Sterne gegeben, aber nach diesem Reread finde ich, dass er mehr verdient hat, weshalb er jetzt 4,5 bekommt.
Das Buch ist einfach.. Genialität pur. Diese unglaublichen Charaktere, die man so sehr liebt und die LIEBESGESCHICHTEN! Ja, Plural! Es knistert so sehr, dass man gar nichts mehr mitbekommt und nur noch mit offenem Mund jedes weitere Wort in sich aufsaugt. Das Buch ist einfach süß und toll und ich möchte es gern studieren ala wie-schreibt-man-einen-awesomen-Roman.
Wirklich: Alle, die Englisch sprechen können, sollten es mit der Reihe unbedingt einmal probieren!

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to pick up the other books in the series! The characters were a lot of fun and it was a really quick, fun read! I think that this would be great for anyone who likes YA literature, likes vampires (though don't expect them all to be scary), and just likes a good laugh from a book they're reading. This is perfect for that!

This book was a trip, y'all.
In short, this book is about Solange, a lowkey vampire princess, and Lucy, her human best friend. Solange is v. important in the vamp world bc she's either the first born (not made) female vampire in history (or maybe in a really long time I forgot). In this world, vamps are mostly human until they're 16, which is when they'll almost die in order to achieve transition to vampiredom (isk if that's a word but y'know what I mean.) So this chick is super important and smells super good, leaving all these male vampires wanting to be her suitor and leaving the queen vampire to want her dead. Solange's friend Lucy is there for the ride, and her job is to be sarcastic and to be attracted to Solange's brother Nicholas. Essentially, the plot takes off whenever Solange, Lucy, and the rest of the Drake clan find out that somebody's put a bounty on Solange's head and that that bounty may have something to do with the fact that Solange is the product of ye ole prophecy.
It's at this point that the horribleness of it all sinks in, amirite?
And don't get me wrong this book was bad. The plot was rushed as hell, character motivations made no sense, dialogue was laughable, and relationships just appeared from nowhere. But I loved every damn second of it.
Hearts at Stake had my cracking up. It definitely falls into the "so bad, it's good" category for me. The word "leapfrogged" was used multiple times during fight scenes. Our MCs who have grown up in this world for 16 years are clueless on very basic concepts in the world so the author can info dump the shit outta that thing. Characters fall in love with one another after one meeting Also, Lucy's real name is Lucky but no one calls her that but her love interest... even her parents call her Lucy, so what's the point in her name even being Lucky. Also also, how does one manage to become BFFs with vampires in the first place?
I'm a sucker for an enemies to lover storyline, especially when the best friend's brother thing is added in. It's poorly done, for sure, but that didn't mean I wasn't chanting "KISS KISS KISS" every time Lucy and Nicholas appeared on the page together.
Final thoughts: I would actually recommend this. If you want something light, ridiculous, and fast-paced, this is it. If you want a genuine laugh, this is it. I thoroughly enjoyed my reading experience, but I can't give it more than a 1.5 star in good conscience. So pick it up and settle in, because things are about to get wild lol.

Review: Hearts at Stake is a feel-good book. I found this book a perfect stress reliever in between cramming sessions for Finals. It was a wholesome enjoyment when you are feeling down in the dumps looking for a quick fix of laughs, smiles, adventure and love. Hearts at Stake features two point of views—Lucy’s and Solange’s—with two separate tales occurring at the same time.
Despite Lucy’s affection towards physical actions (i.e. punching people in the nose) her chapters revolve around the relationship with Nicolas. I found myself really captivated by this pull and push relationship as neither one wishes to accept the fact that they like each other though I do believe that Nicolas has liked Lucy for quite some time now. He’s just one of those typical males that tease girls that they like. I found Lucy such a riot to the point where my affection for her character can be summed thusly: I ♥ Lucy.
Solange’s story involves more action with bloodthirsty vampires as well as hormonal vampires who shower her with blood bags and cats’ hearts? Can we say ‘Yum’?. Luckily for the readers, she is as grossed out as we are and does not go into a deep discussion of its delicious tangy taste though I have heard that it is better than chocolate. It’s rather fast-paced with fighting, an evil queen, and a very much awesome butt-kicking mother. I ♥ Solange’s butt-kicking mother. I happen to like most of the characters….
The only issue I have is the development of both relationships in the book. We start off with both hating each other than all of a sudden they like each other. It does delve deep and is predictable that makes it such fun read.
I cannot wait for Blood Feud when comes out later next year. CAN. NOT. WAIT.

3.5 stars! I don't think it quite deserved 4.
It was good just not that good.
At first everything was fine but then the story was over too quick. The author should've took their time and expanded on it. And I wanted Nicholas' and Lucies relationship clarified.
What I did enjoy however was having the story written in both Lucy's and Solange's POV's.
Their both so different it's awesome and I love their friendship.
Solange is 15 years of age and is the first female vampire born to the Drake family. Which are one of the ancient families who can reproduce.
She is the ONLY vampire able to contest the Queens right to the throne and become queen herself making her a threat. Whilst some want her dead for that reason another ancient vampire who used to be the Queens lover wants her to be his wife for power and to bear him children. making the Queem loathe her more since she is still in love with him.
Lucy is 16, human and is Solange's best friend. She is loyal witty and in Kieran's own words 'unique'. She comes up with wicked pl
and and always follows her own initaitive whilst almost always being underestimated.
On her 16th birthday Solange will complete the blood change and hopefully become a full vampire, however there is also the risk she may die. To survive the initiation into a full vamp Solange needs the blood of an ancient and mortal.

Solange will change from being mortal to being vampire in a matter of days, on her sixteenth birthday. In the meantime, she's fighting off the "suitors" who are attracted by her lineage and pheromones, and the vampire hunters who are after her family. As if her situation isn't difficult enough, she also has to deal with all seven of her gorgeous vampire brothers and her impossible best friend, Lucy.
Solange and Lucy have been best friends for their entire lives. Lucy is also the closest human to the Drakes and is basically a member of their family, which tends to make for some rather interesting exchanges. When Solange is kidnapped, it's up to Nicholas, her older brother, and Lucy to find her and save her before time runs out. But can Lucy save herself when every glance or touch from Nicholas makes her go weak at the knees? And despite her almost impossible situation, what will happen if Solange decides to give her heart to the beautiful, but dangerous, vampire hunter who's helping her survive? A lot of drama and amusement for the reader, that's what!
Our story is told in alternating voices and I'm going to start by saying that despite the fact that the story is mainly about Solange and her family, Lucy has got to be my favorite! She's spunky and full of bite and I love it. She's so funny and vibrant that she balances Solange very well. I found Solange to be quite amusing herself, but she's a lot more subtle than Lucy and while being very sweet, I was drawn more by Lucy and her love interest than I was Solange's predicament.
There's something to be said for a book that is totally well-written and engaging that it has me running into things as I walk through the house because I don't want to put it down. I loved the characters, Lucy and Nicholas are totally my favorites, and they're hilarious, especially when they argue and bicker and try to hide their totally hot attraction to one another. Solange and Nicholas' mother, Helena, and brother, Logan, are totally in second place as to favorites. There are a lot of characters in HEARTS AT STAKE, but they all stand out in their own ways and I really like being able to remember characters after the fact and still know why I like them.
I really loved all the vampire lore, and Alyxandra Harvey not only found a new take on vampires, but also was able to separate her vampires and her story from all the TWILIGHT hype that is obviously here to stay for awhile (and don't get me wrong, I love TWILIGHT and all, but come on). But I do need to point out that within the first few chapters I saw the words "twilight" and "the Host" used and while not references or anything, it still made me giggle...a lot. The lore that Harvey brought into the story was so interesting and there's all kinds of little vampire subcategories so to speak, like the Host, the Hounds, and then the scary blue skinned ones (and no, they are not at all Smurf-ish or from Pandora) called the Hel-Blar.
I found HEARTS AT STAKE to be very enjoyable and fun and I absolutely loved it! I flew through it in just a few hours and ate up every page. The bruise on my shin can sorely attest to that, since I ran into the coffee table while reading because I didn't want to stop. The writing is fantastic, the characters are simply awesome, and I can't wait to read the next book - I've marked my calendar and am totally excited.

The Drakes are an old family of vampires so no tea parties or picnic’s on the agenda with them unless you’re Solange. The last remaining child who hasn’t turned into a vampire yet but with her fast approaching sweet sixteenth that’s about to change. Lucy is Solange’s best friend who also happens to be human but she knows all about the Drakes having grown up with them. As Solange’s upcoming change starts looming the prophecy about her existence comes into play. Attacked by vampires wanting to love on Solange and hunters wanting revenge when Lucy sneaks Solange out to attempt a night at normal things start to change.
Solange receives requests for meetings from family that they don’t see till after the change even the queen has put in a request for a visit neither she can ignore. While her meeting with family is odd it does provide her with a way to survive the change that’s about to start however she may just have to use her advantage to save someone else. As if Solange doesn’t have enough to worry about with the change she ends up kidnapped and Lucy sets out to find her because that’s what you do for your best friend. Will Lucy be able to get to Solange before it’s too late? What about Kieran the vampire hunter who tried to get her before?
We have to main character it bounces between the two Solange our future vampire and Lucy her human best friend both of them I enjoyed. I liked the way they pair off it’s almost as if they complement each other personality wise which I liked right away. However Lucy was my favorite maybe it’s because she has a crush on Nicholas and she made me smile not as serious as Solange is. I wasn’t sure about Kieran but as the book progressed he grew on me and I see a lot of potential for him in the next book.
I’ve had this one on my kindle for far too long with every intention of reading it just never got around to it. Last week a fellow blogger buddy of mine Stormi @ Books, Movies, Review! Oh my! told me how much she loved the Drakes so I decided I needed to check it out and I’m glad I did. What I expected was your typical teenage vampire novel what I was a pleasant surprise the vampires are unique they aren’t your sparkly vampires either. The concept for the Drakes is captivating it’s an interesting unique spin on vampires that I very much enjoyed. The author has one of those writing styles that just flows it’s a well written story even though we have two points of view, it just flows together perfectly. The characters are great I enjoyed both of the MC and was able to connect with each of them in a different way. Hearts at Stake is a fast paced novel that mixes mystery in with a paranormal romance story that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. I found that I had a hard time putting the book down and now all I can think about is what’s going to happen next for Lucy and Nicholas. It’s been a while since I enjoyed a vampire romance like I did this one and already I have the second book on my kindle waiting. Looking forward to exploring more of the girls world and seeing how it will play out.

The author has one of those writing styles that just flows it’s a well written story even though we have two points of view, it just flows together perfectly. The characters are great I enjoyed both of the MC and was able to connect with each of them in a different way. Hearts at Stake is a fast paced novel that mixes mystery in with a paranormal romance story that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. I found that I had a hard time putting the book down and now all I can think about is what’s going to happen next for Lucy and Nicholas. It’s been a while since I enjoyed a vampire romance like I did this one and already I have the second book on my kindle waiting. Looking forward to exploring more of the girls world and seeing how it will play out.

Being a teenager is hard enough, but Solange Drake has a whole other set of problems. With her sixteenth birthday fast approaching, Solange and her family have way more on their mind than her Sweet Sixteen--like planning for her transformation into a vampire. All of the Drake sons survived the transformation in one piece, but being the first female-born vampire in 800 years (and the future vampire queen according to a mysterious prophecy) no one is really sure how Solange will fair. Of course, that might be irrelevant if the vampire hunting Helios-Ra or the followers of the current queen kill Solange for the bounty on her head first in Hearts at Stake (2009) by Alyxandra Harvey.
It's a hard lesson to learn, but just because a person likes Buffy it does not mean that she will like every snarky, girl power-esque vampire story that comes along. Such is the case with Hearts at Stake. Even before coming to that painful realization about myself, I knew I might be in for trouble with this book when I read that the author was sometimes belly dancer who owns a hawk. Say what you will, but I had a bad feeling.
There are two fundamental problems with the story. The first is that everything feels a bit contrived-- even given the fact that it is part of a necessarily contrived genre what with vampires not existing. Solange is at the center of this huge prophecy, the figure who might end a massive civil war among the different vampire tribes, and she belongs to one of the oldest vampire families in the world. None of which is set up for the reader. Instead Solange tells readers as much in a passing paragraph or two which interrupts the story at hand and does little to explain any of these events.
The second problem is that Hearts at Stake seems to be a book at war with itself. The book's narration is split between Solange and her human best friend Lucy. The story also eventually splits into a dual romance. This symmetry seems forced leading to a ratherheavy-handed treatment in some of the romantic matters. The tone of the story is understandably erratic as a result. The story alternates in rapid succession between steamy kisses, deadly fights, and conversations filled with girl power bravado and snark.
Even though both girls were at pains to remind readers and other characters that they were strong and could take care of themselves, it felt unconvincing because there is a difference between saying you can take care of yourself and actually doing so. Hearts at Stake will appeal to many readers for a quick vampire romance fix, but readers looking for a book with more substance would do well to look elsewhere.

This book is the first in a series, and is told by Solange and Lucy. Solange is the first daughter born to the Drake family in hundreds of years, which puts her in a delicate situation. You see, there is a prophecy among vampires that a daughter born to an ancient family will be the next vampire queen. Of course, the reigning queen is not happy at all with Solange's birth and exiles her family. Being the only girl among her siblings, Solange feels quite smothered at times by her overprotective brothers. If it were not for Lucy, she would probably have gone insane a long time ago.
Lucy was, for me, the best character in the book. She is the only child of a hippie couple. The only problem here is that she does not share her parent's vision of the world (tofu? Seriously? I totally get her). Because of her close friendship with Solange, she is a protege of the Drake family. She, like everyone else, is worried about Solange surviving her bloodchange and what this will mean for the whole family, what with the prophecy and all. Lucy was the one with the best dialogues and scenes, especially when they also involved Nicholas, one of Solange's brothers. She is loyal to a fault, which gets her involved in the issues faced by the Drake family in this book.
After reading so many vampire books, this was a very refreshing read, full of action, humor, blossoming romances AND, perhaps the best aspect of it: no love triangles! I am quite a bit tired of them, they are everywhere! I have to say I also loved the dogs (I mean, it was fun to picture three huge dogs being dominated by a pug). I already know that the next book changes POVs, but I do hope that Lucy and Nicholas make an appearance in the next books. For some reason, I was not as taken by Solange and Kieran, maybe because I was wanting something lighter and fluffier than those two. Lucy and Nicholas stole the spotlight in this.

If I put Hearts at Stake in just a few words,it's 'one of the best take in vampires.After encountering different types of vampires:deadly beautiful ones,weak ones needing protection,strong ones giving protection,out typical knights in shining armor and even 'sparkling ones,I've nearly been fed up with vampires.Reading this book was like taking a fresh take in them
Unlike many other stories this one had two heroines.And don't worry,they have their own separate matches.It's a relief that it didn't have a love triangle.Now back to the point,having two heroines was both a good thing and a bad one.The good thing was that it helped knowing the story and situations better.But at the same time,it seemed difficult to relate to both of them,and in my case it was difficult for me to relate to Solange.
I liked both of the heroines.I like the way both Lucy and Solange was amazing in their own unique way.The same goes the Nicholas and Kierran.Still I preferred Nicholas and Lucy.
I loved Solange's family.It was like the Weasleys meeting the Cullens.I loved the protective father,kick ass mother,amazing brothers and wonderful sister.Addition to that is the two things they call as watch dogs.
Even though there wasn't much,I loves the romance.Both the romances were so different from each other,yet so beautiful.
And that was what I'll call an ending.It was so satisfying and the book was perfect because of it.I really enjoyed Hearts at Stake and I am looking forward to read the sequels.

HEARTS AT STAKE is a chick-lit, fluff, candy read. There's nothing special about it and there's nothing memorable. It's just a book that provides a brief distraction from the real life.
The two narrators were different from each other so I could tell whose chapter it was. Their voices were different and realistic. I liked Lucy's sassyness and that she would do anything for her best friend, Solange. And I liked that Solange, in turn, would do anything for Lucy.
The plot was unfortunately not that good. It was all over the place. The book had several sub-plots and the author took turns focusing on them.
1. The Solange-might-die-when-she-turns-subplot. It was mentioned sporadically.
2. Solange-might-be-the-princess.
3. The romance between Lucy and the other guy.
4. The romance between Solange and the other guy (am not mentioning the guys so I won't spoil).
5. Who-wants-to-kill-the-Drakes-subplot.
The author would mostly focus on one of the subplots on a chapter and a different one on the next. The info dumps would detract from the story and interrupt the flow. And there really wasn't anything new brought to the vampire genre.
Overall, don't expect this to be the next Vampire Academy series. This is just a teen paranormal chick-lit book. Meant to be a cute, fast read.

this cover almost put me off, but i'm glad i didn't because this book was really good! having low expectations helped, but the characters were great and humour was on point. i love solange and lucy's friendship and lucy and nick together <3

I've read better to be honest... I don't have much to say about it either. I will read the sequel cause I want to know how the relationship between Lucy and Nicholas works out, but that's about the only reason.

13-year-old me DEVOURED this book when it came out and life has never been the same. I found a copy of the book unexpectedly and decided to read it again and it's just as enjoyable as I remember it to be.
Is the plot perfect? No. Does she "cross her eyes smugly" and do other weird things that don't make sense? Yes. So my 5 star rating doesn't mean much other than that I love this book.
Nicky and Lucky really had my full attention when I was an awkward teenager and their relationship is ingrained in my memory. I should be embarrassed to add this to my reading list, but I'm too happy to care.
I read so many of these fantasy books as a teenager, now I'm tempted to reread all of them.

Why am I trash for these types of books?
This was so surprisingly addicting that I couldn’t put it down. It’s light and fluffy and full of angsty romance. I don’t care how old I am, I’m a sucker for these types of books.

This is a fun read. The protagonists are a blast. Yes, protagonists, plural.
I started out reading Hearts at Stake and became confused. If you read back cover, it's about Solange, would-be vampire princess. But the prologue is titled "Lucy" and is in first person from her point of view.
Hmmm....
I like Lucy, she's feisty and fun. But then the first chapter, six pages later, is titled "Solange" and is first person from her point of view.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. What is going on? So then I start flipping through the book, chapter by chapter and realize that each chapter alternates from Lucy first person to Solange in first person. This is different, so I regroup.
Okay, I dealt with this with Shiver and while awkward at first, it eventually worked out. So I kept reading. It did eventually work out to where I was totally comfortable with it.
I think it took me longer because both points of view are girls and the same age. And since Lucy is the more vibrant personality, I found it hard to connect when I changed to reading Solange's chapters.
Because there are two girls in the lead on this one, there are also two male love interests. Nicholas, Solange's hot brother, was Lucy's beau, and Kieran, the vampire hunter, for Solange. Both guys are hot, sweet and attractive. Both romances are cute, with Lucy and Nicholas being focused on more than the Solange and Kieran.
Now, did I like the book?
Yes. It was fun, fast paced and full of humor. The vampire lore is something with a new twist. Solange's family is great. Her seven older brothers are all gorgeous and kick-butt because they have been trained by her ninja-even-before-she-was-a-vampire mom who leads all the physical attacks.
I think the mom, Helena, was my favorite character. At one point their house gets attacked by this group of vampire hunters and she leads her sons outside and into the fray. The dad's just standing at the doorway and finally says, "Leave me one alive," and Helena yells, "Spoilsport." Terrific fun!
Lucy and Nicholas get the most face time and their romance is a blast. Lots of banter and the sexual tension rises but stays innocent. Nicholas is a dreamy but has a hard edge. Lucy is playful and has lots of fire, whether she's trying to protect her best friend or mouth off to the bad guys...or Nicholas.
Solange is sympathetic as the young girl trying to deal with the drama and changes going on around and within her. She is self-sacrificing for her family and her growing affection for the guy who was initially trying to destroy her is sweet. Kieran is endearing as he tries to figure out where his loyalties lie.
Another thing I liked was the fact that the parents were happily married and the kid's got along with them - both Lucy's (they were gone on a trip during most of the book) and also Solange's. It was refreshing to have happy family lives for our protagonists.
Additionally, I was thrilled that Lucy and Solange were good friends. They cared for each other and had each others' backs. This friendship was solid and a good representation of how good friends act toward each other. Yes, Lucy developed feelings for Nicholas but she never lets that take precedent over her friendship with Solange. Yay, for awesome best friends in a YA!
The romance is innocent. There is some mild use of language but it wasn't overdone.
While it is a series, the ending (while feeling a bit rushed in the final battle scenes) had satisfying closure. None of the major cliffhanger type of stuff. Thank you Ms. Harvey, for finishing the story!
Hearts at Stake (or My Love Lies Bleeding in the UK) is a fast and fun romp for us vampire lovers so pick it up and sign on for the ride!
The Cover: I'm torn between the two covers. I like the US cover. I think it captures the lighthearted flavor of the book. What I don't like is that the girl is supposed to be Solange but it isn't how I picture her, and I also think it has a more juvenile feel. Overall, I prefer the UK cover. I like the colors and not seeing the girl's face. As to which title? Not sure. Guess it would be Hearts at Stake. It just seems more fun and this book is all about the fun!

Hearts at Stake is full of exciting characters with romance, wicked humor, and non-stop action packed into a spellbinding world of danger at every turn.
When I first read the synopsis for Hearts at Stake, I couldn’t wait to read it and I’m so thrilled that it lived up to my expectations and then some. This book is one of those page turners that had me captivated with the world that Harvey created. I love the mythology of the different species of vampires that Harvey introduced in Hearts of Stake. No matter how creepy I found some of them to be, it just made this book more exciting because you never knew who was lurking around the corner to get a piece of the Drakes whether it be by drug induced pheromones to court Solange or bounty hunters set on destroying them.
There are so many exciting characters in this book that have become some of my favorites. Solange is the only girl with a house full of 7 older and overprotective brothers. Nicholas, Logan, and Quinn are my favorite brothers. I found myself crushing on Nicholas, he’s gorgeous and always somewhere brooding. Logan is the pretty boy full of charm and was constantly cracking me up. Quinn is fearsome and laughs in the face of danger. Lucy, Solange’s best friend is just crazy awesome. She’s just as protective of her best friend as the brothers. Lucy speaks her mind and she’s had her fair share of being around Solange’s annoying brothers. Nicholas and Lucy’s flirtatious encounters made me love these two characters even more. Lucy constantly had me laughing out loud when it came to anything Nicholas. Solange, the vampire princess has her own drama to deal with especially when rumors of power plays threaten the Drakes’ existence and on top of that she has to fight off the outrageous things her suitors are doing to get her attention. How can you blame her when there’s blood and gore involved? Solange and Lucy are two great heroines and I’m so glad they lived up to my expectations.
With unexpected turn of events at the end of this book, I can’t wait to see what Blood Feud - the next installment in The Drake Chronicles has in store for us. The synopsis says it will be Logan’s story and since he’s my second favorite brother, I can’t wait to read it.

Solange is the only vampire girl in over nine hundred years. Vampires swarm the Drake estate looking to either court her, kill her or if you believe in the prophecy, kidnap her. Solange is tired of being stuck at her house, not being able to go out ever single moment without one of her annoying brothers tagging along.
She then meet Kieran. A handsome vampire hunter who is out to kill The Drake Family on the bounty.
Kieran is told that is was The Darke Family who killed his father. What he doesn't know is what he was told is a lie.
Lucy, best friend to Solange is human who has grown up around vampires her entire life. She is completely at ease with them. They take care of as if she was one of her own. When things get crazy with the bounty on The Drake Family, with Lucy's family out of town, she too is stuck at the house. Nicholas, one of the Drake brothers, is all of the sudden feeling different toward Lucy.
Lucy notices a change in Nicholas, more attentive towards, protecting her....Lucy also see Nicholas in a different shade of light. She is just not sure what to make of it.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I love that there was two different love stories going on. It was like double the fun, double the pleasure. Watching the love between the fours characters was a great touch. Nicholas and Lucy had great chemistry. The bond between them was something irresistible. Even with Solange craziness of all the vampires coming to her, her falling for Kieran was something nice. Solange was so bent on not dating any of them and not wanting to become queen, that falling for the one who wants to kill you....why not???
The action and humor in the book was another added bonus. The Drake family busted major kick-butt moves in fighting. The humor in the book had me laughing hard.
Alyxandra's Hearts at Stake is one of my favorite books and I can't believe it took me this long to read it. This book is written in romance style. Each Drake finding their loves. I like this. With 9 Drake brothers, there are plenty more novels to come.

Kieran is told that is was The Darke Family who killed his father. What he doesn't know is what he was told is a lie.
Lucy, best friend to Solange is human who has grown up around vampires her entire life. She is completely at ease with them. They take care of as if she was one of her own. When things get crazy with the bounty on The Drake Family, with Lucy's family out of town, she too is stuck at the house. Nicholas, one of the Drake brothers, is all of the sudden feeling different toward Lucy.
Lucy notices a change in Nicholas, more attentive towards, protecting her....Lucy also see Nicholas in a different shade of light. She is just not sure what to make of it.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I love that there was two different love stories going on. It was like double the fun, double the pleasure.
