A detailed history of one of the Civil War's most fascinating and mysterious places written by two licensed battlefield guides. Rare period photographs and a guided tour section enhance this enlightening and entertaining book.
Outstanding history of some of the most fierce fighting during the battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 regiments from Texas, Georgia, and Alabama fought regiments from Maine, New Jersey, and New York in the vicinity of Little Round Top. The area known as Devil's Den saw hundreds of men from both North and South get killed or wounded trying to capture or defend this area. Both Gary Adleman and Timothy Smith describe this part of the battle excelently!
An excellent history of Devils Den from its formation to today, with an emphasis on the battle, of course. Well written and deeply researched, it is a must read.
This book is not just about the action at the Devil's Den during the Battle of Gettysburg, but also gives readers the history of the area, including the many evolutions of the post war battlefield and the money making ventures that ensued, along with the changes wrought to the field by trolley lines and roads. Full of historic photos, readers can see first hand evidence of the changes. The book concludes with an outstanding walking tour of the area giving readers a chance to explore the areas mentioned in the text. Excellent read, even 20 years after its publication. Recommend for all Gettysburg history nerds. :)
