Flame & Shadow #2

A Glint of Steel and Roses

Rate this book
Even Terrors tremble when a Nightmare goes to war.

For centuries, Ezluari has lived in peace, but I have shattered that peace in the name of vengeance. It’s been a long time coming, but it’s time for Lord Iridyn to face justice for the slow genocide he’s sentenced my people to, and for murdering Prince Ren.

First, we must win a battle against the powerful dragon rider, Brenna, and her army of fire wielding demons.

If we fail to hold back Brenna’s advance, it won’t just be my people that suffer. I am the warden of an ancient prison, the last defense against the ancient Terrors that once walked the world. If I fall, their bonds will be broken, and they’ll be free to stalk the mortal world, leaving havoc and destruction in their wake.

We’re badly outnumbered and exhausted, desperate for any sign victory is possible. Is Nevahn the symbol of hope we so badly need? Or just another distraction when Hellion and I should be focusing on the army at our doorstep?

A Glint of Steel and Roses is the continuation of the Flame and Shadow series, a dark fantasy MMX wartime romance that should be read in order.

This book launches right in the middle of the action, catching us up with what we missed with Cian and Hellion already off to war at the end of the previous book. Our three heroes aren’t in a great place, even if the previous book left off on a tantalizingly optimistic note. But before we get to any sort of sweet reunion, Eveland takes the time to remind readers that all is not well in this world; this includes highlighting the darker realities of how death and decay form an intrinsic part of war and combat. Along with the creative and unexpected fantasy elements this author continues to braid into this unique world, I especially appreciated that they do not gloss over the negative aspects of the external conflict Nevahn has found himself thrust into, even while we look forward to his reconnection with his lovers.

Nevahn still acts as a sort of reader stand-in for this world, as we learn things that are already second-nature to Cian and Hellion. Even when the romantic and external drama is fraught angst-ridden, I thoroughly enjoy the both sweet and highly entertaining moments of Nevahn making a home for himself in this world. I also love the way Eveland balances the newness of the relationship(s) developing between Nevahn with Cian and Hellion compared with the weight of so much history between Cian and Hellion. Of course, the trauma of this history also means all is not smooth sailing between these old lovers, which does well to put all three on more equal footing when it comes to emotional bonds.

However, Nevahn is quickly evolving into more than the simple blacksmith of the first book, even one who has already claimed hero status through an important discovery. Once we get a hint of where that evolution may take him, Nevahn’s power and ability escalates dramatically. I had a few quibbles with how quickly he achieves competency in some of this, but then again, war affords no room for trial and error. The epic spectacle and unexpected tragedy that results were more than enough to sweep away any minor issues on my part, and I was more than hooked through this entire book.

This particular story ends on a relatively high note, but Eveland leaves plenty of space for additional mystery and conflict. Especially now that I know from the note at the end that this is a five-book arc and not a trilogy, I’m looking forward to how the mystery of Nevahn continues to unfold, how this affects his relationship with Cian and Hellion…and how Cian and Hellion resolve plenty of their own individual conflicts wrapped up in the political landscape of this engrossing fantasy world.

I have been trying to patiently wait for this addition to this series ever since I finished the first book. This world just has a way of completely pulling me in and not letting go until the book is over. In this installment we learn more about Nevahn, not only about what he can do and how he can stand on his own, but also learn and discover that he's no mere 'normal' human. Not when everyone begins calling him Maelstrom.

We also get to see Cian, Nevahn, and Hellion's relationship develop into something stronger than what any of them predicted it could be. There were so many action scenes in this book! It was full of battle plans, attack methods, strategizing, and asking for help when you need it. I loved every second of this story, everything is just so well written and it's written in a way that just completely consumed you. In a good way! I can't believe this series hasn't gotten more traction because it's one of my favorite series/worlds that this author has written.

This book will make you tear up, at least.. it made me tear up. There's a sense of beauty in the heartbreak, these characters are dealing with grief and loss of a friend, while still managing to fight and to carry on. To take Vengeance on those who took their friend away from them. I enjoyed watching not only the three MC's relationship grow and develop, along with more feelings coming into play. But, I also really enjoyed 'seeing' Nevahn's character grow and build up his courage, strength and voice.

I am horrible with waiting for books in a series I love, but considering this left off on a HFN I'm going to have to wait for the next book. Which I know will be worth the wait. I'm so excited for Nevahn, Cian, and Hellion's relationship to continue, along with them learning more about the magic Nevahn has. In addition to knowing more about the dream Hellion had. So many questions that I really want answered, that I'll have to wait for the next book for. I'm really looking forward to it!!

War, huh, what is it good for?

This is a brutal sequel. This series reminds me of a MMX version of Michelle Diener's Rising Wave. The love interests spend a lot of time apart, there's several battlefield scenes, there's magic involved, lots of political plots and schemes. The heart of it is good. The steam scenes are meh with unnecessary trash talk that doesn't seem to fit the characters in any other way. Hence the lower stars, they're skippable, don't add anything worth reading, and honestly, are rather offensive in language. It doesn't have to be fluffy and sparkles, but gross crassness isn't exactly smexy, either. I enjoyed the rest, though. But be prepared to lose characters you like. This is war. Broken hearts are going to happen. I do like that it isn't all easy wins and unrealistic happiness in the battlefield. Nevahn isn't a Gary Stu, neither are Cian or Hellion. I also love that just because Cian needs an heir, and Hellion could possibly provide one, that there's absolutely no push for a pregnancy. Hellion said no, and their wishes are being respected. Also, very happy over proper pronoun usage and commitment by even background characters to honoring it.

This is the second book in the Flame and Shadow series. This book continues the story of Cian, Hellion, and Nevahn. The action starts for page one. The Nightmares are at war and our trio is struggling. Hellion and Cian are on the battlefield and Cian is trying his best to be a strong leader with Hellion at his side, while they both miss Nevahn fiercely.

L Eveland's worldbuilding and story telling is like no other. There isn't a dull moment in this series and the steamy scenes between MCs are super hot. Normally, MMM stories are hit or miss for me as I think authors often struggle to give attention to each partner's relationship with the others equally. This one, though, is definitely a hit! Hellion, Cian, and Nevahn are all unique on their own and amazing together.

In this installment, we get to see their relationship deepen and evolve. Their love for each other is hard won before a backdrop of turmoil and war. Our trio has to battle strife within their ranks and setbacks on the battlefield. We also get to see Nevahn come into his own and learn what he is capable of.

I highly suggest this series, but make sure you read A Dream of Flame and Shadow first!

I love an epic adventure! In the second book of this fantasy series Cian, Hellion and Nevahn continue the fight defending Cian's homeland. The human Nevahn tries to adjust to gaining powers while all three adjust to their poly relationship. Against my inclinations, I an drawn into this world with L's amazing abilities to build it and can't pull myself away from avidly devouring page after page. And there will be more after this! I am eagerly awaiting the next installment as the history is being written and hold out hope for the fallen to return. I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary opinion.

So good!

This book is packed with action, epic battles, and magic. We get to learn more about Nevahn's magic and back story, which was interesting. Hellion and Cian's relationship continued to deepen with each other and Nevahn. The world building and lore in this book were also amazing. The spice was hot but intimate.

Overall, it was a fantastic read. I am looking forward to the next book!

I received this book as an ARC, but this is my authentic opinion.

A Glint of Steel and Roses is the second book in the Flame and Shadow series. This is not a standalone and should be read after book one. Cian, Nevahn, and Hellion's story continues in this book. I enjoyed watching their relationship grow and change. This book was hard to put down after starting it. There is so much going on that it really keeps your attention. If you like epic battles, magic, and spice then this series is for you. I would definitely recommend this book and series.

There’s a strong balance here of immersive world building, interesting character development, and an unfolding plot that weaves together magic, intrigue, action, etc. and spice as Cian, Hellion and Nevahn’s relationships evolve. Well worth a read (and a gentle note also to start with the first book in the series, if you haven’t already).

This is such a great fantasy series. This book continues precisely where book 1 left off, and you definitely need to have read that before this one. It is such a rich, vividly imagined high fantasy world and story. Yes, it contains explicit MM and Poly s€xy times but there's so much more to it than (very hot) monster smÛt! The world and characters are so beautifully, richly imagined it's a superb fantasy read, with oodles of drama, battles and emotional angst.

A continuation from the first book, we get to see Cian, Hellion and Nevahn explore the relationship building between them as they continue the fight defending Cian's homeland all whilst human Nevahn learns about the powers he has gained.

A story full of magic, intrigue, strategies and battles. This fantasy world keeps you engrossed and the HFN leaves you eager for more.

I'm loving this series!

Nevhan's development throughout this second book hit exactly right. He is the balance that Hellion and Cian need, and I can't wait to see how that pans out when the three are forced to navigate through some of the remaining tension and unknowns.

I am so in love with the world this author has built and the love and hard won growth they have all shared.

It continues

This book was heavy on the battle. It has some steamy moments and what I didn't know is that this is not the end. I really like this world and story.
