Pretty good intro for a kids drawing book. It obviously wasn't long enough to go into a lot of depth, but briefly covered a number of more advanced topics such as perspective and shading along with the basics.

I thought some of the creatures could have been a bit better, but I'm picky about dragon and horse heads, and the whole idea was to keep it basic enough for a beginner. Loved the gryphon though.

I'm not planning to use it to draw but I did get some sculpting inspiration and I think doing some of the exercises as raised reliefs in polymer could be fun.

Shows and tells young artists about using perspective, materials, sketching to imagine and create drawings of mythical creatures such as centaurs, dragons, gryphons, hydras, and minotaurs. Step-by-step illustrations let the kid be successful while creativity flourishes.

This is a great book for teaching children (or anyone, for that matter!) how to draw mythical and magical characters in a realistic style. Our oldest is a budding artist and even though I know she draws well, I was still amazed at the pictures she made after following the instructions in this book. There is some information about the various characters, but she mainly focused on the drawing instruction. I'm not sure I could draw these people as well as our daughter can. The step by step instructions in this book for the basic shapes are somewhat easy to follow, but the finishing steps are much more difficult. Our girls have borrowed this book from their elementary school library a couple of times.
