After Napoleon III seized power in 1851, French writer Victor Marie Hugo went into exile and in 1870 returned to France; his novels include The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1831) and Les Misérables (1862).
This poet, playwright, novelist, dramatist, essayist, visual artist, statesman, and perhaps the most influential, important exponent of the Romantic movement in France, campaigned for human rights. People in France regard him as one of greatest poets of that country and know him better abroad.
I read this for a Book Club. Although I found it difficult to get used to the style of the author, by the time I finished it I was really enjoying the read. It is a very compelling story and I am planning to read Volume Two.
I loved reading this book but to be honest it took me ages! Not sure I took everything in but it was definitely worth the hard work, maybe an abridged version would have suited me better. It enticed me to go watch it in the West End and yes I did cry!
