Agnes De Mille was a piercingly insightful artist, who produced both dance works and literary works that resound with "truths for the ages" about human nature. She knew how humans feel, she knew how humans think, and she knew how to demonstrate that in motion and in superb biographical writing especially Dance to the Piper and And Promenade Home . To A Young Dancer is a personal communication out of this deep sensibility to those aspiring in her most celebrated profession, . She tells it like it is, eloquently, directly, uncompromisingly. Written in a different age, the tone is light years away from the delicate hedging, the sugar coated caveats, the tentative maybes , the shallow reassurances, of contemporary "how to succeed" manuals. She tells the young dancers how they need to be, to be called Dancers; on whatever level they are involved. They hear that this is a position and a profession with rock solid requirements, that won't yield to the "it's all good" "everybody's a winner" "do your own thing" slogans that seem to rule today.
This book was written in the 60's and is still applicable today. It is a great read for anyone who is an artist of any kind, or who knows one. Step by step advice on getting your career going at any age, but particularly useful for ballet. I have already found myself quoting it in my daily life. Best book sale find ever.
