"The Story of Robert Louis Stevenson," by Joan Howard, is a wonderful bookshelf find. This is one of a continuing effort on my part to read obscure books I dig up at my house, my mom's house, or by rooting through dusty boxes. The book is a series of essays or vignettes from different times in Stevenson's life. He did have an adventurous life, even if cut short at 44. I admire his boldness, his desire to make a difference, and his zest for life. Howard told his story in an easily read format suitable for young readers. The illustrations by Jo Polseno are crisp, and are a fun way to break up text even to an old guy. These Book Club editions from the 1950s and 60s are well made.
