I once had high hopes for this book but the superior manga offerings of rival Viz displaced this from my reading list.

This was a title that was ready to take off. It was a Western, a vampire story and it had a movie starring Paul Bettany coming to theatres. I wonder where it all fell apart for me.

Reviewing my reads from years past, I felt that I've outgrown this title. Thus, it is among the first to join my first ever Culling, in the hopes to free up valuable shelf space for more important and worthwhile books.

This is a real flashback volume. We learn how Ivan is adopted by Mr. Isaacs as a companion for his motherless daughter. When the pair fall in love Ivan is sent to the priesthood for even thinking about his 'sister' in that way. 9 years later he returns, but instead of finally marrying the girl he loves he is drafted into a secret organization of the church, investigating a mysterious coffin...

This is a real plot instalment. Disappointingly doesn't have the freaky weird horror of standard of artwork of the previous volume but I was hooked all the same. we learn about Priest's background and suspect that he is actually responsible for the vampire threat. Also begin to see the origin of Temozarela which will continue next volume. Love the flashes to the Crusades and the copies of medieval illustrations like Dante's circles of hell - this is definitely turning into an epic series.

Min-woo Hyung, Priest, vol. 4: Harbinger's Song (Tokyopop, 2003)

At the end of vol. 3, a contemporary researcher found the diary of Ivan Isaacs, and here we have the first part of it. We learn about Ivan's home life as a child and the beginnings of his time in the priesthood, as well as his researches into the crusader who would eventually becomes his arch-nemesis, Temozarela. It's all backstory, but it's good backstory; not much action but a lot of solid character development in this storyline. *** ½

I cannot wait to get my hands on volume 5! This is a better volume - things are being made more clear. Explanations are being made. But I want to know more and I can only know more if I read the next volume.

The book talks about Ivan's history and the begining of the bad events. Enjoyable ride.

I'm in love with this series. This extended flashback has made me forget whatever is happening in the initial story. I'm okay with that. Excellent art and engaging story.

This definitely had an anime-filler vibe whereas the first three did not. I preferred the 'drip-feed' exposition that was happening in the first three volumes; its so much more exiting to discover the character. this one was just an info dump that didn't have the same appeal.
