Transforming Leadership sets forth the core values and leadership practices that can bring fundamental transformation to the life of the local church. Based on experience and research, Everist and Nessan explore three dimensions of transforming (1) how leaders are formed and transformed, (2) how transforming leadership can renew congregations and focus their ministry to do justice, and (3) how congregations can be transformed by empowering all members to use their gifts for ministry. Committed to the vitality and mission of the congregation, the authors promise neither a quick fix nor easy answers. Transforming leadership, they have found, is deeply rooted in theological conviction, expressed in genuine love for the people one serves, and cultivated through wise practices. The book grapples with challenging congregational dynamics, promotes the ministry of all the baptized, and provides vision for the lasting renewal of the church in mission.
This was a joy to reread this book after becoming a pastor. it was one thing to read as a student and another as a pastor.
This book is a primer on pastor leadership. it does not claim to be an expert in any area but covers a wide variety of related topics. With this being said it does not have much depth on any one area, but by covering a wide area of topics I now know which topics I would like more depth such as family systems and trust in leadership.
One thing I wish was in the book is more examples. I did read this book alone and the authors encourage reading in books by having discussion questions after each chapter. I believe through these discussions more examples and personal stories would be gathered, but a personal touch is missing when read alone.
