Today's marriages are under attack and Christian homes are not exempt. That is why Gary and Barb Rosberg have committed themselves to helping couples understand the temptations they face. As one of the key books in the Divorce-Proofing America's Marriages campaign, Guard Your Heart and its companion workbook, Guarding Love, will equip couples to practice guarding love and protect their marriages.
(Found this old book review I wrote in 2005) This book really raised my awareness of how the enemy is attacking marriages as a way to thwart God’s purpose for us in this world. The Rosbergs lead the “America’s Family Coaches” organization and offer many resources for marriage and family counseling, equipping and encouraging couples to “divorce-proof” their marriage. They have authored several books and host a national radio program.
“Guard Your Heart” covers the six critical enemies of your heart:
1. Job and home pressures—when you focus too narrowly on job or children’s activities, you leave your heart unguarded 2. Material distractions—”stuff” can distract us from lasting loving relationships 3. Relationship pressures—failing to prioritize your relationships can affect your heart’s devotion 4. Sexual temptation—both men and women are vulnerable 5. Misguided view of success—how buying into the world’s view of success can leave your heart behind 6. Passivity and control—how the enemy can use our personalities against us
The authors then explain how you can guard your heart against these attacks. First, they explain how our marriages must be built upon faith in Christ, the Rock of our salvation, in order to avoid a marriage “on the rocks.” Then they devote separate chapters to husbands and wives to cover the unique needs, strengths, and weaknesses that make us different; and how we can guard the heart of our spouse. In the husband’s chapter, Gary makes strong case for men’s accountability groups, and gives a good model for what to discuss. In the wife’s chapter, Barbara helps wives recognize their powerful role in the family.
The heart IS the wellspring of life and must be guarded. But we lose our way at times, forget how, or never knew how in the first place. Audrey Jose's "Guard Your Heart" is exactly what you need to draw closer to God, enrich your prayer life, persevere in difficult situations, and remain pure and holy--no matter what is holding you down or how much baggage you are carrying on your shoulders. I have had the incredible privilege to sit under Audrey's teaching of "Guard Your Heart." Trust me, you don't want to miss this blessing!
