I highly recommend this book for every biblical scholar's library. I reference it often. Eye opening. This book shows the evolution of Christian creeds, which shows what doctrines were being argued at the time.

I read a few creeds for the Aquinas reading and it was pretty interesting. I felt it was mostly just a reposition of the same thing, but it was straight forward and rather easy to understand. My favorite part was the introductions to each section. It helped lay out the historical context.

Creeds of the Churches is full of important historical documents, but I thought the editing left a lot to be desired. There's a distinctly Calvinist/Reformed bias running throughout the selection of texts, which I might have found less irritating if it had been acknowledged and defended up front. Other editorial choices are inconsistent and often similarly unexplained. No edited collection is perfect, but I suspect this collection would have benefited from two or three editors--representing diverse perspectives--who could better reflect the variations among Christian traditions.

Leith has done an extraordinary job for us in gathering the creeds of the churches. It enables one to look at the various Christian churches and find the creeds that lie behind their thinking. To have it all in one book is wonderful.
