This was such a great listen! Highly recommend listening to the audio version as it's narrated by Jenny herself, hearing a Scouser get up to burglary shenanigans was ace!

A fascinating journey. I was aware of some of the author’s work via YouTube and various interviews on podcasts. Therefore this book was anticipated and welcomed. Interesting, truthful and dynamic

An autobiography and social engineering guide rolled into one.
People Hacker features the highlights of Radcliffe's unusual career as a burglar for hire, conducting penetration tests for businesses that need to be sure their security is good enough. Suffice to say, there is often room for improvement where the human element is concerned. The only reason hackers get into allegedly secure bases is because staff are underpaid, unmotivated and lacking in training.
In the stories collected in this book, Radcliffe manages to find her way into places through loose door frames and passwords written on post-it notes, but also the human instinct for politeness and fear of social embarrassment. Security staff are so focused on saving face that they take the personable Scouse lass in front of them purely on face value.
Not only are the safety lessons of this book worth a read, Radcliffe's personal journey to becoming a much sought-after security specialist is too. She goes from being a victim of short-lived kidnapping to a thrill-seeking teenager to a runner for her dubious cousin. Fortunately his contacts start her off on a career where she breaks into political offices, entrepreneur mansions and power stations across the world for substantial payment.
People Hacker is a rare book that both shows an upward trajectory for a working-class woman in an unlikely business and gives recommendations on how to protect our own homes and workplaces. I discovered Jenny R. through their "autobiographic" video with LadBible. I was mesmerised and felt giddy with excitement at Jenny's experiences. I never knew People Hacker or even Social Engineer was a term and can be a profession - not that I am planning to have a drastic career change! I was very excited to learn the author would be releasing this book and waited in anticipation for its release.
Now let's dive into the actual book. As you already, I was very excited to start this book but after the first chapters, I got worried that this might be a written version of the author's experiences as a People Hacker. I started to get bored thinking - ah, this is about that story ..... However my boredom didn't last long as I am glad to have experience that although the author had spoken about this particular experience, they would include other sides and provide other colours to their art. I want to specially let any reader know that the author has worked hard to give a new experience and a new light to their stories.

Having chaired the IT security committee at one company, even I found this an eye opener and almost wished I was working again so my internal audits could also cover more of the risk from people.
A very interesting read. I enjoyed all the details of how she tricked security to get into places, the data that is held about you online even if you don’t use social media, etc.

Very interesting collection of some jobs Jenny has endured and a brief history of how she got there. Much of the writing does what it needs to do to have you visualising the (more often than not, mundane office) settings and although Jenny stays calm narrating even when things get tense (stick with her, after the first three or so chapters the reading becomes less awkward), it still has it’s thrilling close calls.

Great read, that I struggled to put down.
I’ve had the privilege of hearing some of Jenny’ stories in person, so I had some idea what I was getting when I placed my pre-order many months ago.
Getting the book on my hands didn’t disappoint, especially when I’ve always had a soft spot for sharing war stories from the trenches. Each story, lesson and anecdote is well paced; fast enough to keep me interested in the next page, but always leaving me wanting to know more.
For completionists out there, be warned that there are a number of threads that don’t get fully explained, such is a murky life… What’s “Frank’s” background? What was up with “the devil on the roof”? Who was the overly arrogant footballer? Etc etc.
But most importantly I learnt the cardinal rule from phishing engagements: don’t threaten peoples coffee!!
And if I ever find a random octopus on my desk, I’m going to give up and go home…..

Very interesting, entertaining story, especially the move from the more innocent childhood break-ins to becoming a con-artist for the (mostly) "good" side. I'd recommend this as good light reading for anyone in Information Security or for promoting basic IS practices to their employees (examples of phishing attempts, tailgating, or social enginnering training for Gatekeepers of Senior Executives).
It's a shame she needs to hide people's identities so much, as it feels like the really juicy in-depth details are skimmed over; only briefly touching on her brother's role in the North West money laundering & drugs trade which has blighted so many lives, and her suspicions that the packages she was delivering for him contained guns. She gets it spot-on with her descriptions of Liverpool at this time though, and the deprivation; those of us growing up on Merseyside at that time will recognise some of the types of characters & locations described in those chapters.

Until I read JR’s story I didn’t know people hacking was a career at all. Quite fascinated by her stories and discoveries about how to break into a business, proving their networks and records are vulnerable. I am shocked how little consideration is given to the safety of info before Jenny proves her value.
She comes over as basically likeable, an idea my brain struggled to accept given her self declared past and the skills she uses to break in. The stories are told lightly snd with humour. I enjoyed the book - so refreshing to find a completely novel topic & then to be enthralled by how JR did her job.
If you like thrillers and you like understanding why people do things, then you’ll enjoy the book.
It’s well written, it’s never boring but always moves quickly on. Nothing gets bogged down, JR moves on to the next and the next thing at the right speed. I liked the way she writes, and her narrative voice never gets in the way of the action. Good fast paced action/adventure book.

I like this book! It’s a lot of fun. It’s a memoir about security and psychology and how those things go hand in hand, and I really enjoyed it.
It’s basically a series of stories about Jenny Radcliffe’s life, her work, where she started and how she got where she is. It’s really fascinating and has a lot of useful information about security-related stuff. I got the book because I saw the author give a talk back in October, so my book is signed! Which is fun!
The only criticism I really had was that I felt like the writing was kind of clunky in places, like it wasn’t as polished as it maybe could’ve been. But I did really enjoy reading it! Like I said, it’s really fun and there are a lot of exciting stories told in a really exciting way. She’s a very good storyteller.

The author recounts her years doing break-ins. Illegal at first, and then legally, for hire, to test security systems. She rarely engaged in tactics like lock picking; rather, she simply used human nature to gain entrance to buildings, phones, computers, and secrets. She relied on the fact that most people don't suspect a woman of being a criminal, especially a middle-aged, well-dressed, well-spoken, and forgetably unattractive one. (Who hasn't politely held a door open for someone at a key-card entrance without asking to see their key card?). She had some rather hair-raising exploits and narrow escapes. You'd have to be an adrenaline junky to do the work. Quite interesting. Might make you paranoid about middle-aged ladies. :)

This was a very enjoyable and eye-opening read. The methods the author used in her career to get where she wasn't meant to go would probably work in every professional setting I've been in. I wouldn't say this book teaches you how to burgle, but it definitely highlights some weak points that could be exploited.
While I believed each story mentioned in the book, I felt they would have been more credible in contrast to times when things went wrong. Yes, there are such instances in the book, but nothing ever seems to go that badly wrong. There must have been times when missions failed, or Jenny was properly caught (fair enough if not).

It's wonderful how this book reminded me of someone who is so skilled and understanding of how cyberspace works. Part memoir, part “please don’t ever trick me like this,” and 100% proof that Jenny is a kick-ass woman you definitely don’t want sneaking past your security team. Her stories about blagging her way into buildings, charming guards, and outsmarting entire companies are equal parts hilarious and terrifying.
It’s a four-star ride only because after a while the moral of the story is basically: “Humans are gullible.” (Spoiler: yes, we are, and Jenny proves it over and over again).

This book was really exciting to read. Jenny builds each story in a way that lets you vividly imagine the setup and think about what you would do in her place. And to be completely honest - my answer in many cases would be ‘panic’. In some of the stories, I actually felt anxiety building up just from reading them.
I was genuinely impressed by Jenny’s ability to stay calm and think clearly under stress, and how that helped her figure out how to handle each situation - it’s truly inspiring.
The book is also a good reminder of how easy we can be as targets for social engineering, and that we should treat our private information with a bit more care.
