I didn't realize when I first added this that it was a biography of Gladys Aylward. But I love her story, so that wasn't a drawback. :) This would be a good introduction to her life and work for younger readers. It hits the high points well and keeps the story moving. My only small complaint--which is not the fault of this story--is that I don't really like fictionalized biographies, where it's not apparent what parts are factual and what parts are filled in with artistic license. I realize that it's helpful, especially for young readers; I just remember being upset as a child when what I thought was true about certain historical figures ended up being invented for the story. :P Not that this story took much embellishing, though, except probably in the dialogue; Gladys's life was adventurous enough not to need much livening up! :D
Content--talk of war, danger from soldiers, deaths, etc.; talk of children being sold
This book was required reading for my kids when they were in third grade, so obviously it is an easy read. I read it along with them, however, and really enjoyed it, too. What an inspiration Gladys was!
Ended up reading this because my 3rd grader needed some reading comprehension support. We did the homework on the final chapter yesterday. As I read the last bit out loud I could barely choke out the words. The book itself was simple easy 3rd grade level reading. And the story itself was not so simply about a remarkable life lived by a woman who was simply faithful and the incredible impact she had because of it. Loved it. My son told me his teacher cried too so at least I wasn’t alone lol
A fascinating true account of a young woman's journey as she follows the path that she knows in heart heart is her calling. Such an inspiring woman who made such a difference in the lives of so many! Intended for children (3rd grade and up) it is a story that many adults will also love! Easy 1 evening read but her story will stay with you much longer.
It was written for young readers, tells the true story of Gladys Aylward and her mission in China, her experience during war with Japan. She took in many orphaned children and helped them escape. While I don’t think my 8 year old child will understand the horrible context of the story, I think she can try to, and also learn about an example of love and service from this remarkable story.
My 7yo: 100 stars! I liked how she was so kind to the children and that she was a great missionary and followed the Lord.
The mama: An excellent, very readable biography of Gladys Aylward. The story is told very well in a way that allows you to experience it with Gladys and the children.
Great biography for kids up to 12. 12 and up can handle more info and harder vocabulary. Good details. Talks about the war but doesn't get gross or morbid. Talks about shooting and people are shot at. I'm glad I could read it with them without it being overwhelming for my youngest.
My little sister read this book in school this year and has begged me to read it this summer. So, I did. It was an overall good and well written children’s chapter book. 😊
I loved this book when I was little and reread it frequently. I don't think I'm called to missionary work but I loved the great example of faith she set and how God used her in such amazing ways.
