This book was one of my son’s favorite books as a little boy. Now that he is recently married I am hoping there will be another little boy (or girl) who can make this one of their favorites as well. I still remember the lovely drawings and the entrancing story. Highly recommend.
The story "The Cuckoo-Clock Cuckoo" was about the little bird inside of the town’s cuckoo clock. It shows what happens through out the day as time passes. At one point the bird leaves his clock because he wants to explore and see other things. When he tried to return to his clock he realizes its stuck shut and he can't get back in to do his hourly job of Cuckooing. It's fun seeing all the adventures the cuckoo clock bird goes on throughout the day and seeing what the towns’ people do on a daily basis. The story was creative and different than most children's books but I don't think it was very well written for children. I'm sure some kids would enjoy it by looking at the pictures or maybe for a younger reader to read a longer book on their own. To me the book was too long for most children's attention span and with all the words on one page and all the pictures on another it didn't seem to flow very well together. I think now a days story books are more interactive so with this older book where the story and the picture are separated you don't get the same feel out of the book as you would for a book created today. The pictures in this book were all told from the same perspective. You would always see the third person view of the whole story. You saw the town as a whole and where the cuckoo clock bird went throughout the day in each part of town, but you never saw anything close up it was always from a distance. It was neat because it was very detailed even from afar and even though it was telling you about the birds’ adventures in first person you were able to see what all the other towns people were doing in third person through the pictures. As a kid I always liked the picture the best and I think that has stuck with me into adulthood, because for this book the picture were my favorite part.
